    Help !!

Migrated a user from an XP machine to a Windows 7 machine.

I'm only getting to grips with Windows 7.

All seems fine except when you try and open either an Excel or Word 2003 file that was saved and or last accessed on the old machine it displays the incompatible file type message and if you click through that the file appears to open but not display - you only see a blank spread sheet however the names of any tabs in the workbook are shown.

There is no problem creating new files using either applications and saving and re-opening them. Files sent to the user created by other users can also be opened fine.

I've checked the file associations and they seem OK.

I'm thinking there may be an issue with the users rights but I have checked and they are set up as a local administrator on the new machine.

Any thoughts on a possible solution welcomed.

I'm using 2003 at the moment (probably will be for a while yet; I hate that blasted ribbon), and it's been working fine with any old documents under Windows 7.

I think Office 2003 works on 7 for the most part, however Outlook does not, so if you don't need Outlook you should be ok. Microsoft will list it as not compatable with 7 due to it not fully supporting it, but word/excel/powerpoint/access 2003 etc should work without issue

I was the same but if you stick at it, you will get used to it.

Were the office files just copied over from an external drive or how did you migrate them?

Office 2k3 is not supported under Win 7. It's 'as is', you get no warranty or any guarantee it will work on the OS, and it hasn't been designed or necessarily patched to run in the environment.

Supported? Seriously? How many people actually call Microsoft to ask for help with Office products?

Well, you understand my point: It's not made to work in Windows 7. If you get it to work in Windows 7, wonderful. There's no guarantee it will. And if you do get it running theres no telling if a future windows update won't brick it again.

You say it was migrated you mean you migrated the installation over OP? I would do a proper re-install of Office 2003 and see if it doesn't work any better.

    Thanks for the feedback folks.

Anyway to update - I copied over a few of the "problematic files" from the old machine on to a memory stick and successfully opened them on another Win 7 machine.

Then tried the same on the users new machine again without issues.

Anyway after a bit of huffing and puffing Looks like the problem was related to permissions on a folder on the old machine that was copied over to the mew one. Once you accessed the individual files in that folder and coped those over it worked fine.

Confidence in Win 7 restored for the moment:)

Make sure you download this if using Office 2003! It provides support for Office 07/10's new format docx, xlsx, pptx etc...
