Do NCHDs need to take out MPS?

    Hi there

I know that there have been talk about this before and I know that MPS covers extra things like good samaritan acts and gives advice etc but the reality is that it's expensive and with pay cuts, loss of grant etc, I would like to avoid extra cost.
Is it worth paying E600+ per annum for MPS?
How many NCHDs (especially the more senior ones, like Reg/Spr) have MPS?
    Thanks

The CIS provide advice on a dedicated 'hotline'.
Good Samiritan acts are pretty rare, and being sued over a Good Samiritan act is extremely rare.
Probably the most important reason to have MPS for the typical NCHD in a public hospital is to cover your representation in the event of a Medical Council hearing, which is not covered by your CIS indemnity.

Whether that is worth €600 pa is an independent judgment call.

Having been involved in complex coroners cases involving court appearances etc the support given by the MPS was worth every cent I ever paid them.

As an NCDH it's becoming more and more likely that a complaint will be made (increasing levels all the time) and having some one to represent your interests at a medical council which is getting more adversarial year after year you will regret not being a member if you ebd up there.

the figure you quote is for sprs and the further up the chain you go the more valuable you realise their expertise is when you need it

    Do you buy travel insurance
    Do you have house insurance

If you do you are risk averse and thus should definitely cover this aspect of your professional career or you stand yo lose your house and your future holidays if ill prepared and advised

Although NCHDs are usually provided with representation at the Coroner's court (via the CIS).
