Using the iPhone as a way to connect your computer to the internet.

Basically your phone becomes a wifi hotspot connected to the 'net. To your computer or other wireless device it's just like connecting to a wireless network with a router connected to the internet. Very very useful if your data plan/contract/provider allows it.

    More info here.

Very very useful if your data plan/contract/provider allows it.

Extremely useful indeed but not much use to you if your phone contract is with Vodafone because they are the only Irish service provider that charge a premium for for this facility....

With every other operator 'data is data', so you are permitted to tether your iphone to the internet and the data comes out of the inclusive data allowance that comes with your phone contract, not so with Vodafone...!
They are of the misguided opinion that if you access your data allowance by tethering as opposed to directly on your hand held mobile, that same data somehow mysteriously becomes (quote) "a different type of data" and therefore liable for an additional premium or charge (call it a 'smart phone levy' if you like).

Tethering is indeed an extremely useful function but if you want to get the most out of your iphone (or any smart phone) just make sure you're not on a Vodafone contract....

Its an ongoing discussion in one of the biggest threads on the board here...

and some of the excuses from Vodafone for their policy on this matter really are beyond belief...!

    Or summed up here....

Thanks for that, I just got an ipad with wifi only on it and was going to use the tethering thing on the phone for web access on a little trip this weekend. You may have saved me a fortune.

I wasnt aware of this ridiculous vodafone policy and given that they are limiting the data allowance to 500g when my contract runs out shortly they can fcuk right off (my good lady will be leaving them as well).

Surely when they're initial batch of iphone contracts run out most people will be getting away from them as fast as they can.

The question is which network do I go to?

imho 3 Ireland are the best service, but it seems to depend on where you spend most of your time, because there is a huge thread about people having problems with them. For my part, most of my time is spent in Dublin, on the south side. The vast majority of that time is spent around Dublin 24, 12, 6, 6W, 4, and 2, and I've always had a great 3G connection in those areas. I'm sure the other carriers have also got great coverage in those areas, but if coverage is the same then 3 (and maybe Meteor) leave the others way behind in terms of value for a data package (although their iPhone specific packages are not as good as their normal data packages from what I remember about them).

I am with vodafone but only on pay as you go with an iPhone 4 but I'm in the process of getting it unlocked as their data allowances are terrible who would you suggest I switch to my sights are set on 3

All of that is true. Unless... You beat them at their own game and change the tethering APN in the carrier bundle to the regular Live! APN ;)

    Free tethering. You're welcome.

If you're PAYG with o2 you can't tether your phone (officially) either.

You're charged for tethering with O2 since last year sometime too, bill pay. There is a way if you're with Vodafone to tether using your inclusive bundle.

as above, if it's an iPhone, the only way is to JB and involve a 3rd party software (MiWi)*

    *excellent tool BTW

Dodzy, is there any chance you could post a 'walk through' on how to set that up....?

Go to http://jailbreak-me.info to see if your phone is jailbreakable. If so then go to iclarified.com to get instructions on how to jailbreak. Then install miwi from cydia. You can do a free 3 day trial and then it cost $9.99 for a license which you can pay for by paypal

Thanks, I've already jail broken my phone, I'll go onto Cydia and look for the App...

I've just searched on Cydia and I can't find MiWi....?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 742 ✭✭✭The Big Gig

Sorry it's mywi. It's actually on the home screen on cydia

You've been told before that this only applies to iphones and not to other smartphones. It applies to iphones (and not only on VF) because Apple allows rhem to do it.

Yes, with an iPhone. I have it set up so I can tether using native tethering on vodafone with no extra charge.

    @billyfewmates

Don't waste your money on mywi*, if you're interested in doing it my way for free pm me.

*unless, of course, you have a jailbroken iPad wifi. Then definitely get mywi on demand!

Hey jack, did you use this to alter the APN? http://www.unlockit.co.nz/

No, I don't see how that could work on iOS4 tho since every carrier bundle must be signed by apple. If a bundle is not signed it is ignored and the Unknown.bundle is used instead. The only way around this (or so I thought?) is to patch the CommCenter to bypass the signature check.
