I started a new job last month, I was told that I would be working week on week off had no problem with this. Now the owner/boss has decided that he wants me to work full time Which again I have no problem with.

He has told me that I will be working from 10 - 6 monday to saturday in a busy shop on my own. There was one other staff member but she has left and he fired the relif girl so its literally just me on my own all day everyday with only a sunday off. He says it will stay this way until September then he will review and see about hiring another staff member.

I know I am lucky to have a job and should not be complaining but am I right in thinking i am entitled to breaks and that I should not be alone in the shop?!?

Also I gave my new boss my P45 and was under the assumption that he had sent it to the revenue as I am being taxed, I rang the tax office to ask them about sending me out a statement for my FIS application form, The lady I spoke to sounded confused and asked why I was applying for Fis if I'm not working. I told her I had started a new job a month ago and she said I am not registered as working? When I spoke to my boss and said this to him he said he lost my form so has put me on the same tax brand as the last employee who was a married woman with 1 child I am a lone parent with 3 kids.!!! Is there a way I can fix this and how will I go about it.

    Thanks

I don't believe it's illegal for you to be in the shop on your own.

It is illegal for you to work from 10-6 without a break, with those hours you are entitled to a min of a 30 minute break.

Your boss needs to contact revenue with your details and get your correct tax credits, so you do not end up underpaying or overpaying tax. Ring the revenue back, give them your pps number, the name of the business, when you started and they will automatically send out your credits. They will also send you a copy so you can check your payslip to make sure it's correct.

i think it is also illegal to have only one member of staff in an area where accidents may occur. similar problem years ago in a petrol station where i worked. a young lad was robbed on night and was on his own. the next day the guards asked the manager why he was on his own and manager said thats how sunday night always was. your man made a claim for unsafe work place and won. manager had to ensure that two staff were always on from then on.

think of it this way, if you fall and break your leg or something who can you notify to go to hospital or to take you there, or to close up shop?

you also need to be able to go to toilet and such, which you cant do as you have no way to leave the store.

Almost right: you actually need to get your boss to tell you his employer registration number, and then:
    - you ring revenue and tell them the details, and
    - revenue contact your boss and tell him your tax credits.

Don't ever rely on a company contacting revenue for you.

The last three times I've done this, by giving them the name and address of the business, Revenue have found them without my needing to get the reg. no.

Just my experience though, I might get the same helpful lady everytime :)
