Saw this earlier : Apple dropping optical drives ?. while I can see their point of view on this , and I do agree that optical drives are on the way out ,as an IT contractor I'm not quite ready to give mine up yet.I still ned to burn boot cds and other disks on at least a weekly basis.
It appears that apple have moved my scheduled upgrade forward a bit and am in the process of upgrading my 13" mbp to the 15".
Does anyone else think that this move might be a bit premature on apple's part , or am I missing something obvious?

They aren't dropping optical drives just yet. I take these ultra-thin 15-inch rumours with a grain of salt. Even if it is true, it won't replace the current 15-inch model.

I would gladly drop my optical drive for a second (SSD?) drive (in fact, I tried to do that but I realised I have the wrong MBP model for a caddy)

Just give it an extra USB port and use external burners.

I've put in a caddy and extra hard drive into my aluminium macbook. I have an external drive if the need to install or burn comes up but it rarely does.

Personally, I haven't used a DVD drive in about 2 years, so have no problem with them killing off any optical drives. The Macbook Air is definitely taking centre stage in Apple's Macbook line, and reckon this is one of there steps towards an iCloud future. Although it is far from becoming mainstream, and will be a long time before we see a dramatic decline in physical media sales.

The last time I used my drive was to install snow leopard. It's no longer a requirement on a mobile device where the space would be better served by extra battery. I wouldn't be able to count the amount of times I could have done with an extra hour or 2 of battery when not close to a power point. An external drive is a good option.

I would be more worried about them dropping the ethernet port. It's the main thing stopping them from making the device thinner.

I still buy CDs and rip them to iTunes so I wouldn't like to love my optical drive entirely but I'd be okay with an external solution for this once a week occurrence.
