My mate was given a 32gb iPhone 3gs, he's looking to maybe shift it and he wants to swap it for my 4 year old Toshiba laptop. It's a satellite model with vista HP 32bit, 2gb RAM, 160gb HDD and a 17" monitor. Should I swap? It needs to be unlocked and I'm on Meteor pay as you go.
    Many thanks :D

I'd say you'd easily get €250 for that. But then again, the new iPhone is coming soon.

Would I get €250 for the laptop? or is that the iPhone?

iPhone going for €270 to €350 think I should part with the cash I was told by a work collegue who fixes laptops that the laptop is worth about €250.

So...buy the iPhone €200, unlock it €30 and try sell the Tosh laptop I think. :P

You can get the LG Optimus 7 new for €159 which is a way better phone. It's up to you really.

Yeah I sadly might leave it iTunes is a serious enemy of mine and the poor battery life and so on. I have a Samsung Galaxy Europa and love it, might save up to upgrade to a newer Android :D

    So Toshiba laptop anyone?

Also mtb_kng thanks for your help

Where are you getting the €30 for unlock, is it from existing Network or some other shop/internet? if it's from a shop/internet is probably using UltraSn0w so if you update to a new official apple software will get lock again.

Can you get existing owner to contact provider to request the unlock? if they do it will be unlock even after software upgrade.

it costs nothing to unlock an iphone with ultrasn0w

The Laptop will still be a laptop in a year's time after a bit of clean-up and repairs if needs be whereas the iphone is more or less a redundant brick. Hold on to your laptop.

Yes that's true, it doesn't cost anything if you do it yourself but if you bring it to a shop to get it done they will charge, not sure if €30 or more, also most providers will unlock it for free only requirement I know is that you top-up x amount to get the Iphone unlock.

I know about ultrasn0w but as far as I know the provider wont unlock it because the contract that was on it was canceled or ended somehow. There is a shop here in Portlaoise that is claiming to unlock and jailbreak it but I'm not sure could the software be updated after?

I know I keep pondering over that but I recently forked out a few hundred for a lovely new laptop and I was wondering would it make any sense to try sell it, like would anyone be willing to buy a 4 year old laptop? It's in brilliant condition and thank god I haven't had one problem with it but what would someone pay for it? While even if I swap it I can sell on the iPhone on for €300 or more.

If they need to Jailbreak it to unlock it is because the will do it with ultrasn0w, so will get lock again once you upgrade OS.

The only other way I know to unlock is with gevey sim but I think just the adapter is more than €30

You should maybe ask them can they unlock it without Jailbreak that will answer your question, also if you upgrade and gets lock again will they unlock it for free again.

It won't stop making calls or playing music. Do you just mean that there won't be any firmware updates at some stage?

You're 100% correct, I rang up the store this morning that are offering the unlocking at €30 but like you said if I upgrade it becomes locked again. So they offered me a factory unlocking for €80, so I could upgrade the phone. Seems a little steep for me? I was wondering if he called o2 Ireland would they unlock it over the phone if the certain amount of credit or time on the bill pay package was spent?
