Folks I have had my car for about a year its a 1.9 TDI golf (07) and I got it with 100k miles on the clock.
When I bought it there was a slight rattle (well tinging noise) when she is idling. When I clutch the rattle goes away. I have had it in for servicing and the mechanic keeps telling me its the flywheel yet I am not too sure.
It now has 147k miles on it.

    Anyone got any ideas??

What makes you think your mechanic is wrong?

Well the fact that its not exactly a loud noise or anything and that there are no other symptoms in 50k miles of driving it. A few of my mates (who work on cars) have said it sounds like its a gearbox bearing or else a clutch bearing.

Could be clutch release bearing but most likely flywheel,i wouldn't panic though it could last another 50k like that plus it will get a lot worse before going - you will know all about it from the racket it will make - thats the time to get it replaced.

Sounds to me like the clutch release bearing. The bad news is if you need to replace the clutch release bearing, you should probably also do the clutch and flywheel, especially if you plan on keeping the car for a good while longer.

It's not something you can leave. Eventually the clutch will stop working

I dont mind doing the clutch but the price on the fly wheel I just dont have at the minute.

haven't heard anything extraordinary, keep driving, you shall ask same question after 2-3 years. Just turn your music louder, and that's it :)

I wouldn't do a clutch without a flywheel on a diesel golf at 100k miles tbh. Hold on until it gets worse, it might last ages.
