About 50 MPG is achievable easy enough however some of the earlier ones gave trouble bit a lot of these problems should be ironed out now. Have you been looking at any particular car???

Expect a bit more MPG so as long as you dont have a very heavy foot!!. I had two 1.9`s one with 298K and the other with 100K. Nothing major went wrong but the 2.0 engine gives a lot more trouble.

No bother. Stick up a link of one if your intrested and we will give you the verdict. There is a good few Passat drivers here..:)

Theyre decent sturdy cars, comfortable and good MPG as long as your an economical driver as said above.. Make sure the turbo is good by a test drive, my friend found out the hard way.
Also a drop of petrol in with the diesel (once) will clear out any build up in the engine.. A great tip for my golf i found.

Thats only the base model OP. Plenty of Comforlines around for similar money and you get a lot more extras. That one has very high mileage too.

what would be the difference with the comfortlines? just more features etc?

Off the top of my head:

Chrome surrounds on the windows and lower doors.
    Nicer seats.
Dual zone climate control as opposed to A/C.
    Cruise control.
    Alloys wheels.
Arm rest along with a few more things I cannot think of..

Something like this is much nicer and cheaper:

C/L also has electric drivers seat..

Comfortline doesn't have alloys as standard, they were an option but most have them!

If you can get a highline with more chrome, tidy wheels, and heated leather seats.

I know three people with 06 or 07 passats and all have trouble with the electric parking brake, it can tend to stick on or refuse to come off!

Aim for the highline!!! much better seats than the comfortline which is seriously lacking hip support in vigourous cornering!!!!

the engine block broke on my passat 1.9 tdi with only 25000 miles last month , required to have a new engine fitted.
engine blocks are brittle ,and expensive.
"wont be buying another VW." any time soon

Surely there is something more to it than that

    poor casting and soft metal

Besides the obvious (BHP, tax, performance, fuel bills) is there any discernible difference between the 1.9 and 2.0 in the turbo diesels? I've encountered a few websites that say that the 2.0 gives more trouble.

2.0 litre TDi PD engine eats injectors, oil pump is also dodgy on them. Not worth the hassle imo.

car with 25,000 miles and just over 10 weeks out of Volkswagen 2 year warranty when engine collapsed on Naas road with what sounded like an explosion..
car was fully serviced in accord with vw schedule by a main vw dealer... wv offered a new engine but screwed me for labour to fit.aprox 18hours @75 euro per hour
. Volkswagen Group ireland warranty dept. not very nice people to deal with..basically said to bugger off and stop annoying them.
was my second new passat but wont be dealing with VW in future..and will be warning any one interested to be very wary..

I also discovered in Vw garage that the engine block breaking at the mounting point bolt holes is is a common enough occurance with these engines

3 months out of warranty and they offered you a new engine as a courtesy gesture. i'd take their arm off! that was a generous offer on their part, most other manufacturers would have told you to feck off and have been well within their rights to do so.

they offer a 2 year warranty and when its over, its over. whatever about a few days grace, expecting it to push on nearly another 3 months is pushing your luck, they aren't a charity.

75x18 = 1350 to fit a brand spanking new engine.

do you really think you can take your car elsewhere and get a brand new engine supplied and fitted for less than that?

maybe, if your very lucky you could get a second hand engine fitted for that, but you don't know the history of that engine and there is a good likelyhood that the same problem could happen again, whereas the engine VW provide will likely have been modified so the problem wont reoccur.

I have a 2005 B5 Model TDI and have no issues to date with the engine/gearbox. There's about 110k miles on it now. Good on diesel and has enough power to get by. My round trip to work is about 50 miles daily.

Just make sure that it doesnt suffer from the water ingress problem - check passenger side under carpet and ensure its dry otherwise.......

if damage was due to me , yes i agree but when due to bad manufacture, I dont agree...

In short, the difference is like night and day. I have a 2.0 140 hp tdi with 6 gears. An absolutely brilliant engine, I can accelerate in 6th gear to overtake without changing down. Over 65,000 km without a problem.

I drove a 1.9 tdi hire drive once, the first thing I noticed was the engine noise, it was like a tractor compared to mine. Wouldn't pull the socks off a dead man either.

I had a 1.9 from new and now have a 2.0 but I cant really see that much difference tbh. In saying that I drove another 1.9 and it seemed to be very dead..

Test drove a B6 Passat 2.0 TDi PD before and wasn't that impressed with it to be honest. I reckon a 1.9 TDi with a remap would be a less troublesome choice.

+1 especially with all the 2.0 problems also the 1.9 is less prone to DMF failure for some reason.
