    Hi all,

I bought a dress about 2 weeks ago in Coast. Just looking online there today and it's reduced to €60 less than what i paid for it! I'm sick!! Could have got shoes for that!
I still have my receipt, think i'll go see if i can get it onsale and then bring back the full price one the next day.
There's no laws stopping me doing this is there?
I know it was 28 day return/refund on the dress as i checked when i bought it.

Hhmm if you return it they don't have to give you a cash refund as there is nothing wrong with it. If they do out of goodwill, they would give you the sale price back afaik.

no if my receipt has the full amount they have to give me the full amount back, i can just make up something about the dress not fitting properly. I asked the girl at counter when buying it and she said i can bring back within 28 days for full refund.
They would have to give me the amount i paid for it though as thats whats on my receipt.

Yes you are right. If you dont have your receipt they will only give you the sale price however if you have a valid receipt then they have to refund you the full amount.

thanks Dovies, thanks god i didn't buy it any earlier or the 28 days would have been up. I'll be bringing the full price one back over the weekend and have reserved a sale one in another store which i'm going to collect tomorrow.
    Yay, new shoes for me......

Ive done this in Oasis before, makes sense:) make sure that your size is still available though or you might miss out on the dress

I've also bought clothes, only to find it cheaper a couple of weeks later. Unashamedly, I brought it back, refund, and bought it again. As long as you return it within the allocated timeframe with a receipt, you'll receive a refund via the method you paid! :)

I would get my refund then walk over to the rack and pick up the dress again and pay for it! :D

haha! I'd say the shop workers would do the same!

I'm being nit-picky here but they don't actually HAVE to give you a refund - you are only entitled to a refund (or replacement or repair, with proof of purchase) if the dress is faulty but most shops do allow refunds with proof of purchase as gestures of goodwill. But you're sorted seeing as you checked already that they do give refunds, nice one!

Thanks annee, yes i did check when i bought it as it was a lot of money for me to spend on a dress and i know that coast reduce everything as the season goes on but i knew i wanted this particular dress and wasn't willing to take the chance waiting for it to go on sale.
Thankfully one shop has it left in my size on at the sale price so i'm sorted.
It pays to keep an eye on sales in shops especially for big purchases like this, the dress btw is for a wedding in a few weeks so thats why i had bought it but not worn it. So now i've a few quid to get a bag or shoes. Happy Days!!
    :):)

They don't, under the Sale of Goods and Supply of Services Act 1980, a full refund will only be given if the goods breach the Act, eg: not fit for their purchase, not of merchantable quality, not identical to sample shown.

A store can legally put an item on "sale" if said item has been at the higher price for a consecutive number of days. During this "sale period" the item is considered to be of "sale" price value, not full value.

Only out of good will can the customer be awarded a full refund if the good does not breach the Act.

Just finished the Leaving Cert, I can quote this Act in my sleep :)

Shops don't have to give you a refund but a lot of shops do just to keep people happy, even in sale situations.

A lot of shops these days have their refund/returns policies printed on their receipts and so if they say that they will accept refunds for 28 days then they have to.
The shops can of course stop doing this at any time though if they want but they would still have the honour the commitment to the people who bought at the time when the policy applied.

(Don't know how I came on this thread by the way)

Nordstrom in the states will give a full refund on anything you buy with them once you have the tag intact. Whilst we were in the process of moving back to Ireland in 2008 from the US my wife came across a dress in her wardrobe she bought back in 2003, tags and all intact, still with the price on it. I was shocked when she made the suggestion that she should bring it back and get a refund. She duly did and got $350 in cash from Nordstrom's customer service.
Supposedly they'll take anything back even if it was obviously worn. It's no wonder their stuff costs a fortune.
