Toilet Keep Running when Flushed

I just had a couple of new toilets installed and they are both the exact same, push button cisterns, however, when i flush one of them the water keeps running into the bowl and so the cistern doesnt fill up again, if i push the button down again it stops it and the water fills up, however it doesnt fill quite up to the 6L line like the other toilet does. I managed to get it to the 6L line yesterday and when i flushed it again it worked perfectly that one time but then went back to how it was. This picture is pretty similar to my toilet has any one any ideas as to what could be wrong with it?

    Could be several things.

First off the thing on the left is your ball cock. The little float attached to it can be adjusted higher or lower to set the fill height.

For the flushing...try to see is it due to the push button mechanism or the central suction device (don't know what it's called). Catch the top of that central column and pull it up. Doesn't take much effort. The cistern should empty into the bowl. Let it go and it should drop back down again. If that's not working right there could be some debris around it. Try cleaning it out.

Try to learn how the mechanism works. The cable is attached at the lower end operates a lever type system which is what pulls the column upwards. Check the cable is not loose or bent. There's a little flap on that lever I think which must be positioned correctly to cause the return mechanism to work.

At the button end check the spring is seated correctly. That assembly can be taken apart but it's a bit more tricky. Shouldn't need to be done anyway as it comes pre-assembled.

Am working from memory here of one I had to fix where the cable was bent at the lever end of things so can't be more specific than that.

Best advice is to learn how it works and you can fix it if it goes again. It's not that complicated. Just don't force anything.

Kinda sums it up.... Just check that the sipohon is sealing correctly which will indicate the cable as above is stressed

I pulled up the centre column and it flushed no problem but when i let it go it didnt drop straight away i had to encourage it to do so and again wouldnt re fill, so while holding it up I ran my finger around the washer at the bottom and around the bottom of the center column but couldnt feel any noticeable debris.

Now the cable itself does move about a bit and is by no means full of tension so could it be this is just a little too loose and needs to be bent back so its a little tighter?

If the cable is loose its not fit right. Can you take pictures. under the flush buttoon where the cable is attached to the flush button and the siophon?

This is the only pic i have a the minute will try get better ones and post up. I compared this toilet with the other one and cant see any major difference between the two, they seem to be set up the same, the cable is connected to the same holes on both loos its just with the broken one it seems to move a little more although does get tighter when the button is connected

Photo deosn't show much. Take one from side angles or post a link to good photos of the same model on the web.

Try to see if it's a problem with the cable retracting back when you let go of the button. Cable could be bent. Definitely don't bend it if it's not bent...that will probably knacker it.

On mine you could pull off the lever assembly from the column. If you can do that you can check that the column will fall of it's own accord after being pulled up. You need to take things in stages and check one by one.

You can always switch bits from one toilet to the other to identify the problem..but be careful as these things aren't that robust.

From the photo i reckon Its not the clutch cable or the siophan is the problem its the inlet valve. The reason i say this is the mechanism you have is usually fine. If it goes its usually the inlet valve and this goes becase there might be dirt in it.

    You could be right Joey.

From this bit I read that the ball cock was working fine. Needs clarifying.

Had another go yesterday evening and managed to get it working, if you look at the picture on the extreme right of it there is a greyish screw which i just adjusted and it seems to be working fine now, just gave it a couple of clockwise turns and voila. Cant believe it was that simple but then thats always the way with these things.

Thanks for all the help i would never have managed to figure it out otherwise

Thats the height adjuster for the ball valve. It seems you might have been letting in too much water. RT@M :D (with affection)
