i was shooting crows this morning with no ear protection and i,m suffering for it now. i dont use ear plugs because i cant stand not being able to hear. so i use digital ear muff's when shooting clays but their far to warm to use in summer and i cant wear them for a long time crow shooting. i'v seen these new cens digital ear plugs that work the same as the muffs. allowing you to hear everything but the gun shot. only thing is, their very expensive. anyone any thoughts on them or a cheaper alternative?www.censdigital.com/

    2 questions
    1. What type Shotgun you have? Semi, Dbl etc
    2. How much is your hearing worth to you?

I used to have a remington 11-87 which I found very loud to shoot as the sound comes out the Ejection port.
I use a bottom ejector now and I do not mind the sound.

If you shoot a lot of crows and worry about your ears don't worry about the price of hearing protection.

An issue I will have to address this year also. I have tried ordinary ear muffs but find them uncomfortable and also get in the way of gun mounting. The little plugs are great for blocking noise but I enjoy the sounds of the countryside when sitting in a hide. Having ringing ears and a pounding headache really does take the shine of a good days shooting.

well the cens plugs seem to be the answer but at £400 i was hoping to hear(no pun intended) from som1 that had them or knew som1 who did. i wonder are they stil comfortable after a days shooting.

    Lads,
In case you didn't know, even a single shot out of a firearm is in the range of permanent damage.

NEVER, EVER, EVER, shoot the bigger rounds without ear protection.

Also, "getting used to it," the loud bang without pain, means that you're losing your hearing.

I don't like the mickey mouse ears, however, I do like my hearing. Some of the electronics are out of my price range. However, I did get a set of these.

I have not tried them yet, but will advise when I do.

Also, for those that are already suffering from hearing loss, consider seeing a specialist now or getting a hearing aid now.

A hearing aid is not just a loudspeaker in our ear. There's more going on than just making noise loud. One problem is that your brain needs to work with the hearing aid. At a certain age, the ability to make use of the hearing aid falls off. That is, if you wait too long, it might be too late to get any benefits from the hearing aid.

I look at it like this, you enjoy your shooting and you use a shotgun.
How much did that gun cost?
How much do you value your hearing? could you put a price on being able to hear?
I think hearing protection is cheap for what it does, and even the expensive stuff like stereo mugood quality muffs are still only a couple of hundred or less.
Thats not even the price of a basic shotgun.

i was talking with the main crowd in uk and they gave me the numbers of there irish and n. irish agents. one in dublin and the other in belfast who quoted me £117 stg and they have a croud in fermanagh who will make the moulds which is only down the road from me. what i want to kno is, how well can you hear when there in?? the cens plugs work like the digtial muffs so you can set the volume the same as your hearing or louder if you want. but there £400 stg!
