Hi, i have been offered a second hand 70-200L f2.8 non IS for € 900.00. I can buy new from Amazon for approx €1200.00, Bermingham for €1300.00 and Conns for € 1449.00. Question is do you think €900.00 represents good value for a 3 year old lens? Is there any known issues with these lens. I know they are one of the best Canon lens out there but its a lot of money to hand out without doing some bit of homework.

A good question to ask yourself is do you need f2.8 and all that extra weight when you could get the f4 model?

Obviously check the front and rear elements for damage to the coatings.
Check that the zoom and focus wheels feel smooth and not lose.
Take a few test images to check sharpness, you don't want a bad copy.

Also you can check the manufacturer number on the rear of the lens to determine which factory it originated from and when.

Some factories are preferred over others but I forget which and why!

That is the exact question i am asking as i can get the f4 on Amazon for under €600.00 delivered. I intend using it a lot outdoors and equaly as much indoors. I dont mind either cranking up the ISO or using a speedlite with the f4 as im not doing weddings or anything where i would be shooting natural light. Decisions Decisions

Give Ian "Kerso" Kerr a shout. Perhaps his prices will sway you. Look up his ebay store and ask him for a price list.

I recently bought the f2.8 non IS 2nd hand here on adverts. In fact I sold my f4 to part fund it.

I absolutely love it. It's a beautiful lens and is extremely bright and sharp. It's a huge improvement over the f4 which was also a fantastic lens. It's actually bigger than the new f2.8 mkII, not sure of the weight difference, but MissusP&B just loves it too and doesn't mind the extra weight.

€900 may be a bit OTT for a three year old lens (mine was only one month old) given that one sold for €800 just last week on adverts. Haggle!

2.8 is 2.8. At will be razor sharp on f/4.
It depends who was the original user, if they could be trusted.
For such investment, you should schedule test shoot, process the pictures and then you can decide.
