    Taken from DigitalSpy Forums:
"So what can we expect over the coming months? Well we have it on reasonably solid grounds that Channel 4 are planning to launch a HD channel soon, which could be E4 HD, Film4 HD or possibly more likely More4 HD as that will be a new channel and therefore not tied into any existing (Sky) contracts. We also believe talks are ongoing with Channel 5 to bring 5* and 5 USA to the channel, with Channel 5 HD possibly to follow"

The same old rumours, to be honest. I reckon More 4HD will be more likely to come before Film4 HD and E4HD. More 4 HD was announced to launch this year, while the other two will come to Freesat based on their contract with Virgin and Sky.

As for the 5* and 5USA, it will be nice to see them join Freesat and I'm sure it will only be a matter of time.

Really hope 5* and 5USA come to FreeSat.
That was one of the main reasons I was looking at FreeView instead.

Join Freesat are reporting it as a rumour. Reliable source and the are also reporting that 4OD and Demand 5 are on the way joining the recently launched ITV player.

personally would rather have film4 HD, but dubious about how much HD content they would actually have

I would imagine that most films are available in HD.

i'd seriously doubt it. given the amount of old movies and low budget movies film 4 show i doubt there have been 2k masters taken of them

I would imagine all the movies Film4 shows at primetime are all available in HD.
Film 4 has been available in HD for over a year now on Virgin Media in the UK.

    Taken from Film4 website:
"Will all your programmes be in HD?

Film4HD is a direct simulcast of the core Film4 schedule. A proportion of the films will have been originally made in the HD format, or converted from 35mm film to the HD format. The remaining non-HD programmes will be up-converted from the SD source material."

fair enough, in that case bring on film4 hd. i was worried they were just doing their own upscaling on SD material. can imagine that is the case for many of the older films .

that said, prime time viewing is only about a third of the material on film 4, so in terms of an overall % the quantity of native hd would be low. might be better off with one of the other channels taking the bandwith as they might be able to offer a higher portion of HD

Not sure how it relates to television but older films that are mastered well in HD can look amazing and totally benefit despite not being filmed with modern HD camera equipment.

I'd assume the HD masters that Film4 would use would be from the bluray version of the film or would I be wrong?

didn't mean to question that as you are quite right. but if you look at a film4 schedule for the week, and then see how many of the movies listed have ever had a 2k or 4k scan done i think it would be a pretty low %

but as others have mentioned, if you got a couple of the newer movies shown at primetime in HD it would be worth it

    for example, tomorrows schedule is

    My Girlfriend's Boyfriend
    The Barbarian and the Geisha
    Jane Eyre
    23 Paces to Baker Street
    Angus, Thongs and Perfect...
    Alien 3
    Hostage
The Truth about Cats and Dogs

i'd imagine only alien 3 and possible hostage from that have a hd master available. the others would be upscaled SD

Film is not pixelated so any old movie the was put on decent quality film can be converted to full HD quality, and higher qualities if/when they become popular in the future. Anything filmed with a modern HD digital camera will not be as good quality as an old movie filmed on decent film. That's not a problem as long as nothing goes beyond the current 1080p standard. Any old movie can be shown in full HD if a HD master exists, and if the master was taken from the film (rather than upscaled from a SD master) then it will be every bit as good as any modern movie being shown in full HD.

I agree a lot of old films are better quality than some of the new films shot in HD.

I recently purchased a full HD tv set and Blu ray player. The upscaling of SD discs is quite impressive, particularly The Sopranos episodes. The cherry on the cake however has got to be the 1959 Alfred Hitchcock classic, North by Northwest on Blu ray. The picture quality and sound has restored my faith in the capabilities of HD content. Other content on the Blu ray disc is an interview with Hitchcock which I believe was filmed with the master of suspense in the early 1970s. I had seen this footage on tv a number of years ago which was originally broadcast in SD and once again I can merely express my delight at the cleaning up of the sound of the interview (heavy on bass and quite easily understood).;)
