Sharing a drive from a laptop that won't boot

A housemate has an old laptop (an IBM Thinkpad T42 with XP). Recently it refused to boot and showed a bluescreen with a UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME message. I fixed this with the XP CD Recovery Console, chkdsk, fixboot, fixmbr and it worked again. Happy days.

Now, 2 weeks later, the blue screen is back, and chkdsk complains about unrecoverable errors, and trying to dir the c: reports an "error during directory enumeration".

The disk should be easy to remove, but has resisted all my efforts.

What I'd like to do is find a way to share the drive over a network to be able to try some data recovery software, to retrieve the owner's music collection.
Is there a live CD of some variety that would allow the sharing of the unbootable hard drive ? I tried a couple (Hiren and WinUBCD) but couldn't find a way to do it.

Any ideas on how to share the drive, or other suggestions ?

Have you tried booting using a live cd of ubuntu? You should be able to see and possibly share the hard drive that way.
