After the success of the last outing it's time to start planning the next one. On the day I said it would be Macreddin but I have been thinking about it a lot since and it was a bit naïve of me as other factors need to be taken in to consideration.

Last time around lots of people did vote for it and David was very generous with his vouchers but it would be roughly an 8 hour round trip for me or I could stay over but that's means more expense and I know I am not the only person that would rule out. In saying that, if enough people want to play Macreddin then the outing goes ahead. This is after all not a dictatorship!! :D

So I'm putting it out there. What are people's thought's?

Somewhere in the portlaoise area if possible. Would lvoe to play Macreddin but like you it is 3.5 hours to get there for me, may or may not be a possibility.

    Macreddin works for me

you could split an outing into two separate venues? Maybe Macreddin for the Leinster boys and somewhere like Thurles, Woodstock etc for the Galway and Munster contingent.

Portarlington, Naas, Athy, Heritage, Dunmurry Springs, Esker Hills, Tullamore all great options in my opinion. Mount Wolseley is a fantastic course in Carlow, good road links there. Gowran Park in Kilkenny is meant to be nice.

Would it be worth considering to have say 6 outings a year, maybe in March, April, June, July, September and October. Post up the 6 venues at the start of the year. Each entrant contributes 5er towards prizes or smthg and maybe pick up a fourball voucher off each club we go to.

Based on quality of courses, prices and geographical dispertion in the interests of fairness, I would suggest the following six:

    Mount Wolseley (Carlow)
    Esker Hills (Tullamore)
    Dunmurry Springs (Kildare)
    Thurles/Dundrum (Tipperary)
    Woodstock (Ennis)
    Macreddin (Wicklow)

I would suggest that outings should take place at courses near enough to motorways. This would surely give the most amount of people the chance to make the outing?

I really do not want to split the group. If we go down that route it'll be a nightmare. :(

That's what I think but it's up to everyone to decide.

I'm going to agree with my playing partner there and suggest that the Curragh be strongly considered. Its probably only 45mins from the M50, is around the 2-hour mark from Cork and probably 1.5hrs from Limerick so ticks all the access boxes.

Its also a great course, is in great nick, does excellent food and is my home club :D.

    Hi Anatom,

Can you get prices from the Curragh? Fair point you made there and a good "PR" exercise made by yourself on behalf of the curragh ;)

Ha! That wouldn't really be a surprise would it??!!

Green fees for societies are €20 from Monday to Thursday, €30 for a Friday and €35 for a Saturday. I'll get in touch with them and see about getting a deal though...

Guys if your looking for somewhere in around the motorways i live fairly close to the Heritage in killenard and know some of the guys there and my father is a member in portarlington and I play Dunmurray springs often so would be will to see about prices dates etc for any of these courses. Like the Curragh all are about hour 15 from dublin city centre or two hours from cork and all are fairly handy to get to from the M7. I'd consider all these local enough for me so would be no dramas to check them out.. If the board wishes of course !icon10.gif!

If you could get Saturday society prices from them that would be great.

Basicailly what we will try to do is get 4 viable options, put up a poll and decide from there, datewise we are thinking end of august on a sat.

Everyone is welcome, GUI handicap or not, also any help is greatly appreciated.

    Keano,

How many players would you think we'd be talking about, how many played dundrum?? Just so i can have a rough idea to see about getting the best price..
Playing dunmurray in two weeks on a saturday with a society and its 35 and Heritage will be roughly the same as green fees are 35 & 40 on saturdays, portarlington not sure but will check it out...And i'll let you know for sure about the 3.

Only 19 played Dundrum but that was a Friday so I'd expect 25-30

Not sure if someone else is checking this but im a member at the heritage in Killenard. I know the rate i get for bringing guests is €30. I could try and see if they would match this but weekends are usually pretty busy so as much advance notice as possible would be an advantage.

let me know if u want me to ask the GOLF operations manager

No harm in asking. 27th August or 3rd Sept. 25-30 people

I'm based in Athlone, and in my experience a course within 30/45 minutes of the M50 and close to the Motorway will probably work best for most people. This would mean most people could travel on motorway to get to the course.

The problem with further west is it means anyone coming from the south would end up travelling cross country on poor roads. Good choices in my opinion are:

    1. Headfort - new course (Great course in fantastic condition)
    2. Naas - Hidden gem, great back nine, great greens
    3. Rathcore - Close to Enfield - Played there on a Friday, fantastic course for €25, Highly ranked by Golfworld.
    4. Heritage - Good choice, provided they keep maintaining it
    5. Carton House - 2 lovely courses, O'Meara probably suited to golfers of all levels.
There's lots of others in that strip around the M50.

I'm looking forward to playing Macreddin, looks like a great course, but I think it's location doesn't work for this group and would rule alot of people out.

I think pick the date, pick a course and we'll all do our best to get there.

Pat, if your a member in killenard might be best if you talk to niall he might do for the 30 for you, i reckoned would be 35 or 40 anyway, if its not a problem, i can do either im in monasterevin so its no problem i do be out there a fair bit !! ty

    This isn't a rant , just my 2 cent!!!

What happens to the 28 votes for Macreddin in the last board outing voting system, was it pointless ???

I wanted to go to Dundrum but couldn't make it cause i didn't have the car back from the garage in time but if the next venue was to be changed to somewhere midland then i be quite disappointed. Not making a big deal out of this! :D

I think a new poll might be in order to be fair to everyone involved ..?

The Heritage and Macreddin should be included anyway...

Macreddin would not suit me or a lot of people IMO but they were really good to us last time so it has to be a consideration even though it would rule some people out. :)

Entitled your opinion figo and if you read my OP I said if enough people want to play Macreddin then that will be the course.

Rathsallagh is another quality course not far from the motorway 2, as k.p.h said do same as last outing, pick a few courses and most votes win. I'll play where ever it's held.

Guys, its a gathering that is still very much in its infancy. The Boards Golf Society is very close to being a reality but it still needs to be cuddled and treated with very soft hands. 19 was an acceptable number for a fledgling golf group but for it to kick on it needs top be kept in mind that we have to accomodate as many neutrals as possible and the vibe in Dundrum was that the next outing should be in a place that is pretty much accessible to all the major cities.. Dublin, Cork, Limerick etc..
The obvious courses are in the midlands and stretching from Portlaoise to Thurles or Nenagh seems to be the popular triangle. With the last outing being in Dundrum and that being pretty south it seems only fair that the next be further north. This would obviously suit the "pale" crowd but how bad is that..
I think that Macreddin, even though I am chompin at the bit to play it, is to awkward for too many at this early stage and there are so many alternatives that tick the boxes.
With that in mind I think it should be

    1. The Heritage- Fabulous course and great value deals at the moment..

    2. The Curragh- Good track and easy access. Local member that can get best Deal also.

    3. Craddockstown- Just outside of Naas and again easy to find. Super value to all categories of golfer

    4. Portarlington- One of Kevin Markhams top scoring courses and just off the motorway.

    5. The Heath- Value, easy to access..

    Just my tuppence worth...

I'd love to get out for a round if spaces available. In Dublin but willing to travel within a couple of hours. Don't have an official handicap as yet, just back playing after a long layoff, although will be using that app on the iphone,Golfshot to record my progress, would a handicap from that do?
Have to say though Macreddin looks stunning on the vids on their site,I think I'll be giving it a visit.

Again, I'd have to concur with those who would perhaps prefer the golf to be played not far off the motorway. We had 19 golfers in Dundrum and the majority were Munster based with a few of us from the midlands, thrown in for good measure! While Macreddin would be a fantastic and worthwhile course to play, it would probably rule too many of the aforementioned out.

Definitely think the Heritage, Naas, Curragh should be included in the poll..

Thurles, Roscrea, Nenagh, Mountrath would be very central and accessible to most and worthy of consideration also.

Would like to get out again with fellow Boardsies, McCreddin is a stretch but I'm all for playing new courses.
David was one of the first to come forward with a prize for the first outing and that's not to be scoffed at.
Either which way it's looking like a full day for us Munstermen/ladies.

When ye thinking of having it,last Sat of August?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 798 nocal

All this talk of various venues is all well and good imo - but how many of them would be able or willing to cater for a society outing of 30 plus golfers at the end of August? (I say 30 plus as there seems to be increased interest in the next outing).

Keano - might I suggest that a date is set first and then it would make it easier to make enquiries of a short list of 4 or 5 courses to see if they could facilitate the outing.

There is no reason why these outings cannot lead to more informal get togethers for a round of golf with those who attend. Also as each outing is put together we all learn about how easy it is for various courses to facilitate us.

If any help is required in organising the next one then let me know.

The last one looked like great craic, glad there's people enthusiastic about keeping it going. For the next one, The Heritage would seem like a logical choice alright. An hour down the Motorway from Dublin, a little over an hour from Athlone etc. Seems like a fair venue for everyone. I was there last week for a meeting, and the course looks fantastic. Was dying to play. The whole place is impressive, it'd be a nice venue for it.

We are looking at either Sat August 27th or Sat September 3rd.

I agree we should poll the course but I rang the heritage myself yesterday and they told me they are completely booked on those saturdays..........I guess we have to remember that booking 10 tee times at this short notice will be tough. Maybe the guy who is the member might be able to get us in there?

Keano- Will you formulate a Poll of courses out of what people have been saying as we need to get on this quick if we are to book a Sat at such short notice?

Hi GetCover, we had pictured those as ideal dates so as to keep the interest in this society ie. within 6 weeks of the last outing, however I will ask Keano to also poll a date but these polls will need to be wrapped by next Monday I reckon in order for us to negotiate some deals.

Next year however I think the committee will decide the dates and courses in order to get the best deals possible for the society.....this can be discussed at a later date.
