Amazon Package Opened

    Hi all,

I just received an Amazon book delivery to my work address. The strange thing about it was that the package was opened. I didn't have to sign for it. The receptionist let me know it arrived.

Does anyone know where along the delivery line it would have been opened? I'm a little peeved because it was a personal book I bought.

    Thanks,
    Walrus

I had an Amazon package delivered to my house by an post and it had been opened. I'd say customs are opening them to check the contents. Its possible that yours could've been opened by somebody at work, or it might've been opened in the post. We've less and less privacy these days...

Probably customs. Has happened with a few bigger packages I've bought.

I bought the book on Amazon UK and I live in the UK so where would customs see it? Does it come from overseas?

I would like to believe the receptionist wouldn't open it but you never know.

you get stuff delivered to work you lose the right to not have it opened IMO

    So who receives the right?
The company or the company's representative or the person delegated to open post.

My last job we were told in orientation that any letters or packages delivered to the office could/would be opened in the postroom so not to have anything delivered there that you would be embarrassed if someone else saw. Not sure about the legality of that or what have you but it's what we were told. Also if the receptionist has to open a lot of post during the day a personal letter of package could get opened accidentally, after a while your brain melts & you get a bit happy with the letter opener & stop reading addresses properly

If it had been opened by customs there ought to have been some notification of this. No?I am only guessing but I doubt they go opening packages and not inform the buyer. i would ask the receptionist, though I think it's true that she is withinn her rights as a representative of the company,to open the package.

Theres also the possibility that the company has an anti-terrorist policy. No nail bombs etc. One idiot making a prank call can activate it.

Although in reality, it probably did get opened accidentally.

When you say it was "opened", had it been resealed, or was the packaging actually open when you got it? Customs et al would reseal it, your receptionist not so much.

Was it a dirty book? :pac:

Nah, nothing dirty or inappropriate. I just don't like people knowing my business.

If the package was opened at reception, I highly doubt it was accidental. I work in a large company and personal stuff are delivered all the time.

I have had packages delivered here before unopened so I don't think there is a policy to open all packages.

The package was in an Amazon cardboard cover, seal opened and no attempt to seal it.

Shame the book wasn't titled 'How to stalk your receptionist for literally years ignoring numerous barring orders and spells behind bars'.

Opened in-house so. The Postman wouldn't handle an open package as it would expose him to accusations of interfering with it.

My package was opened in the post and not resealed. You know the way the cardboard amazon packages are just folded in on themselves. They can be opened and refolded and they will still be secure even if they're not resealed. So you cant be sure if it was opened in the post or by the receptionist.

Better off getting it delivered to Home address and if nobody is there to sign for it, they'll leave a note saying when and where you can collect it ... usually post office etc. At least won't be opened 'in error' at work then.

Then don't get stuff delivered to work.

Most companies have policies that they can open any delivered letter or package. It's not being nosey it's Health and Safety.

I didnt know Amazon sold porn :D

but seriously, often items sold to UK buyers are officially sold by Amazon's Preferred Merchart, aka the Jersey-based Indigostarfish.com.
Jersey is technically outside the EU, so customs could then open it for inspection.

Last time I bought from Amazon.com (US) it was opened by customs and my postman informed me that I had to pay €30 odd VAT on it before he could deliver.

If it was shipped from within the EU, then there was no customs inspection. Also, when customs open a package they re-seal it afterwards, and it will have a label saying it was opened by customs. So can people stop saying this was opened by customs, when it quite clearly wasn't.

More than likely, it was opened at reception, as many companies have a policy of opening all incoming parcels. Usually this will be to check for a PO reference. In any event, by getting it delivered to work you waive all rights to privacy.

If it was accidentally opened in the post, then the postal carrier would re-seal it, and make note that it had been opened in transit.

Customs can open any package coming from any country including other eu countries. (cigarettes, alcohol, prescription meds etc etc)

In this case its very clear it was opened after delivery and not really an issue. Company is entitled to open any mail / packages coming into their premises no matter what it is. - And it even could have been opened in error.

But more likely the recptionist is suspicious of the OP and wanted to enter into his world of dark secrets:P
