Thinking of buying a 2nd-hand BMW 320D but is the turbo about to fail?

    Hi all,

Bf and I are thinking of buying a second-hand BMW 320D Touring, 02/2007 with 123,000 km.

A nice car altogether (or cleaned well) but when we press the gas pedal harder, there is dark smoke coming out from the exhaust pipe at first. Then, it clears up, but initially there is always the dark air.

Is this the turbo engine showing signs of imminent death??? We looked online and it seems like it is a relatively common problem ...

Is this normal? Should it not disappear after the engine warms up a bit? (we drove it for 10-15 mins around the block)

Also, if anyone has a trick at what to look at the BMW 320Ds, please share.

    Thanks a bunch.

Diesels are smokey yokes under hard acceleration.

Dark smoke is normal, especially in cases of steep acceleration and/or start up.

White smoke (or sometimes blue afair) is a sign that the turbo is on the way out.

Thanks, guys. It was definitely dark smoke ... I hope it is normal.

I am worried because my parents have a small VW Polo also diesel and it has no smoke whatsoever ...

If you are that concerned then make sure to have an independant mechanic examin the car before agreeing to purchase it.
