Removing car reg window etching

Hi. Does anybody know if this can be done? It would have to be cheaper than replacing windows with a UK reg on them.

I called Autoglass and they stopped doing window etching a few years back. I figured that a blank template cut to size to put over the existing reg would work. Better to have a blank than the wrong reg i guess.

    Any ideas?

    thanks,

    Bud

    Sounds very suspect....

You could get a dremel and grind it out. It would not be pretty, you'd end up with a frosted square. An alarm sticker might look nicer.

Thanks for your tip. I'll certainly give that a shot....

Not suspect at all in fact. I'm bringing in a vintage car from the UK in about two weeks and the reg numbers are on all the windows. Not great when I'm going to be changing to a "ZV" reg...and it's an MGB so a nightmare to replace the glass in...

    cheers....

kind of against the whole idea of window etching? to prevent theft, to help identify the car if it's ever stolen? what if you ever want to sell it on, and the new buyer is suspect about the window etchings tampered with? more trouble than it's worth??

Is it possible to re register a UK vehicle to an old style reg (ZV)??
I thought you are given a new style reg as my UK import was given 83-DL-xxxx

You're probably right. It's purely a vanity think to be honest. Nobody else is going to notice (unless you come up close) except me....

I think the alarm sticker with a white background will work....

If it's over the 30 year limit, yes. Yours was and still is under 30, you have the option to change to ZV when yours is 30 years old. This is all probably in the charter in greater detail :)

You could try some Jewellers Rouge - it works wonders on light scratches, it may be enough to work. It's not expensive if it doesnt anyway, it's about 5 euro a pot from any Jewellers.

Car might look even worse with alarm sticker on every piece of glass. A lot of the window companies that do fancy mirrors and etched glass have a mild acid that could be used.Mask around reg and apply acid, leaving small frosted rectangle.

I was surprised to see a product in Practical Classics that claimed it would polish out window etchings !

Dont have it to hand though !

Another view point of this is that some people buy glass from a car that has been genuinely broken and want the glass to be free of any marks, if they can be removed in a way that leaves the glass perfect then why not.... after all it's the owners car, glass and decision
