Looking to buy my first car am currently learning to drive. Was looking at Peugeot 206s but have heard that they are not great for learning on as changing gears can be more tricky than on other cars . Any truth in this??

I cant drive one because the pedals are too close together.

Depends what you mean by "woeful"..:D

The 206's can either break you heart or can be very reliable..:)
The only main problem with them is rear axle bushings..look at the rear
of the car and if it looks like this /----\ then the axle is goosed.
All peugeots have notchy gearboxes...once you get used to them you'll never even notice when driving.
    best of luck.

I agree with the above too, hate them, and have heard they can be very troublesome, hence the lowish price

I have had two 206's one for my first and second was a slight step up 1.0 - 1.4

They are a great car for starting off with. The pedals are close but it didnt bother me that much. As for the Polo forget it, my sister had that as her first car, was horrible to drive and had no feel to it, unlike the 206

Herself has a 206cc and my mother has a regular 206.

Great little car when you get a good one. I wouldn't in a million years buy one privately though, unless I really had a full list of checks. There's a hell of a lot you'd want to be checking out.

First an foremost, the com2000 unit is known to give problems. Get the thing to a car park and rigorously test the indicators. Watch for any unusual switching itself off, flashing with no ticking etc. Bring someone with you to stand outside and watch you drive it around. Are the headlights coming on when you hit the indicators?

As for the pedals, I can confirm they are closer together than they should be. I try and wear certain shoes if I'm driving one. On top of that, there's not enough clearance between the pedal and the dash (for want of a better description for the panel under the steering wheel). If I'm wearing long toed shoes then they catch off this as I come off the pedals. It's never quite felt dangerous, but you can get yourself tangled up in there. Sufficeth to say I'd always be conscious of my feet driving a 206.

    +1 on yaris, fiesta, micra.

This will be a shocker but 1.4 civic is really good reliable thing. Finding one standart with no bull**** on it is near impossible. A lovely standart 4 door saloon civic will go for miles with no trouble. Will be a problem to insure of you are 17 thought.

Learned to drive in one and drove an 04 model for 3 years only up until two weeks ago. I think they look good and they're nippy enough when they want to be, but i wouldnt go near one again. Alot of little things needed to be replaced often, too often, electrics were an absolute disaster, so much so that you'd lose the cool while driving the indicators clicking on and off, lights coming on and off, central locking not locking when the roof light was on or off or whatever is chose to do on any given day. That said, my cousin has one that she has never had a problem with. Luck of the draw!

206's are a great car, nice handy cars to learn in and IMO they look better and more modern than the rest of the granny-ified cars of that era (ie. The Micra, Fiesta and Yaris).

Pedals are a bit small so if you're a male with anything over a size ten boot, maybe stay away. You would get a 02-03 206 for the price of a 00 Yaris, too.
