Gimp - Editing photos

    Hi

I have downloaded the photo editing software package Gimp.
Is there a way to erase the background of a photo on Gimp? What im trying to get is a photo of an object with a clear white background. A lot of online shops have a pure white background that has clearly been edited in some way but I cannot seem to do this on Gimp. Any ideas?
Unfortunately Photoshop is probably the best package to use for this but I cannot afford it.
Sorry if this has already been answered!

    Thanks

You'll need to get to grips with selection tools and layer masks.
So you would create a white layer below your image. Use a selection tool(s) to select your object. Add a mask based on the selection to erase the background nondestructivly (so you can re-edit).

It's pretty much identical to Photoshop.
