For the first about 5 seconds of Criminal Minds tonight at 9:00, the picture was in full HD, then somebody flicked a switch and it went back to SD.
If they have the capability of showing Criminal Minds in HD, why the hell don't they do it?

Maybe they're waiting for Mux 2 to become operational or just testing the pre-recorded playout system?

They are not allowed to broadcast on HD from mux 1 under the SI signed by Minister (part time) Carey. I imagine they are all ready to go HD when they re-launch (or is it re-re-launch) Saorview in September.

Currently there is no mention of any Saorview services on RTE at any level. There has been no mention of RTE NN (on Saorview) ever on RTE. They have rights issues on RTE 1+1 and on RTE jr. resulting in blank screens on RTE jr at weekends because of this. We also know about Fair City rights preventing it being carried on RTE 1+1.

There is a definite cooling of the Sourview Saorview project.

No RTÉjr at weekends is due to technological limitations according to RTÉ. Finances permitting and subject to technological investment and infrastructure there may be weekend programming from Phase 2 (May 2012).

I was told by someone in RTE who should know that it was rights issues.

An RTÉ consultation document says finances and technical limitations.

Given RTEjr appears to be running on unattended automated playout, (links in wrong order, entire programme segments with no audio) can't see what would prevent it running at weekends, unless of course it's a union issue.

I was told that it was rights issues. Maybe they considered paying for 7 days was too much.

Source probably spot on Sam, I guess a repeat on the same day is possibly cheaper than running again on a different day. Shame though, as it is a good FTA service, my toddlers give it the thumbs up anyway !

Rights issues particularly on RTE+1 are not unique. Blank screens can also be found on the ITV+ channels on Freesat. Also if they are holding off HD programming on 2HD untill mux 2 is up and running will this mean nothing is going to happen untill mux 2 & new mast are all ready @ Maghera?

I hope not as the work on Maghera will not be complete until the end of 2011 according to an email i received from RTENL a couple of weeks back.

These blank screens and the obligation to use mux2 for HD all comes from the SI passed by the last gasp of Cowen's discredited government. I am surprised that Minister Rabbitte has not revised it so that the obligation of which channel goes where is left to RTE NL to decide, and the removal of advertising from RTE NN is reversed as they need funds to make something of the channel. Also RTE 1+1 is a total waste, particularly as they do not even acknowledge it exists, and they never sign-post it.

It is almost as if RTE NL is due to be sold off.

Yeah but they have been known to show GAA in HD on Mux1. So bang goes that theory.
    Does anybody actually know anything?

I thought they were broadcasting some programmes in HD??????

Blue Bloods and other dramas, GAA, Galway Races, Movies and some documenteries all seem to be in HD to me!!!

Yeah, a drama appeared to be in HD a few weeks back.

Not sure of the name though, the one about the police in america.

Since they do not advertise it as HD, it could be described to the broadcasting police who enforce Statuary Instruments as 'testing'.

Since launch on the 29th October 2010 26th May 2011, no mention of programmes that are only available on Saorview has been made on RTE. When they launch it next time, perhaps they may take it seriously.

HD sourced material which has been downscaled and re-upscaled will look better quality than SD material upscaled. Though they could be broadcasting native HD at times too, just unofficially.

I've emailed RTÉ & Saorview on the lack of available information for forthcoming HD transmissions. RTÉ - zip, Saorview - We will pass your comments onto the relevant department in RTÉ. End result - Heads in Sand Syndrome - Nobody knows or wants to do anything about the EPG or print info available.
For example this weekend, All Ireland Qualifiers & Golf, has anybody seen anything anywhere re HD? I know the golf is on RTÉ One & of course can't be in HD, but still nothing on the Soarview EPG re GAA on 2"HD".

They did at least once, during the Saturday afternoon general election count a studio discussion was only carried on RTÉ News Now and this was announced during the RTÉ 1 coverage (http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=70879666)

But that was before the relaunch on 26th May. It only happened once and I would imagine severe finger wagging occured afterwards.

I've heard Michael Lyster mention in his preamble on a couple of occasions for GAA games that the forthcoming game was also being broadcast in HD on Saorview RTÉ Two HD. Also an insert was shown before the game saying that same was going to be in HD on Saorview.

The Magners League final was also in Native HD as well

That may be so, but there appears to be an RTE policy to ignore Saorview and all it contains.

I think RTÉ misunderstood SaorView to mean "free OF viewers" :)

Someone in RTÉ must have been reading this thread recently, just saw a promo/ad following the 9 o'clock news for RTÉ1 +1 on Saorview.

    I spotted that aswell.

So did I, but still no mention of RTE News Now. Or digital radio being available on Saorview. But it is a start.

Now RTE or RTE NL, tell us what you did to The Listener film the other night.
