there must be, but the trick is to be able to get the good weather in which to make them-in my area many farmers used the 4-5 sunny days 2 weeks back to make hay-it's a bit of a risk but with guaranteed weather people want to make them

Plenty if you're fairly free with your time, pick up a clean square baler and run it behind a handy 80hp tractor, make 500 square bales a couple of times per summer for friends and neighbours, another €2k to €3k into the pot every summer guaranteed;)
Also the option of unwinding round bales and making small square ones (sounds a bit mad but bear with me) to sell in the winter seems like a winner to me if you can set yourself up properly. Buy the rounds at €25 per bale and turn them into 18 square bales at €3.50 each- €63, €38 profit:D, you surely turn 30 rounds into 500 bales in a day with the help of another fella.
    Expenses (€870)
    30 rounds= €750
    Days labour= €70
    Fuel, twine etc.= €50
    Income
    500 squares= €1,750

might be the only way of making money from hay this year. the country is flooded with hay now and not enough cattle to eat it

Ease up Grecco;), im only putting up figures for discussion purposes, with the margins i thin k there is money to be made anyway turning rounds into squares.
Even making your own i think making rounds and turning them into squares afeterwards stacks up for ease of getting them into the shed ande under cover.

Would I be far off in thinking 10 small square bales in a 4x4 round?

I remember years ago a square baler giving trouble at the knotter on one side, baled abit of a field but pulled out and the job was completed by a round baler including the square bales with one twine, and I think that's where I got the figure from.
It was a long time ago though!

We did it about 20 years ago with a claas square and round baler and it took 14 square bales in a round bale, this is what i based my 18 bale guesstimate on with the new bigger, better able to pack balers.

I would often turn rounds into squares during the winter for abit of extra money.I would get 14 squares to a round ,maybe 15 if i went abit smaller but im fooling my self in the long run.I charge 3 euro a bale, prob could get 3.50 if i waited but i like people to return for more so 3 euro works for me.I baled 23 round on my best day with my brother in law.Hard work, took the following day off.My rounds are made with a welger, maybe the newer balers make bigger bales.I can only go on my experience.

So by that reckoning Pat you can make 322 square bales in a day (23*14) and you will get €966 for them.
    You're expenses would be:
    23 Round Bales @ €25 each: €575
Running the tractor & twine etc.: €100
1 days Labour hired in: €70
    Total Expenses: €745
    Total Income: €966
    Profit: €221

Not bad for a quiet winters day if you're set up well, any way of improving the system?
I've heard of lads using bales unwinders for the rounds etc.

Im looking into that at the moment.I have heard that there is a few people around Ireland, one in Kildare i think that have the set up right and can square up 50 or 60 bales a day easily with the system they have.Dont know how much it cost but it cant be cheap.Looking up the net but nothing has showing up yet.

I've made 13 decent size square bales with a bamford super 559 from 4x4 rounds made with a Welger RP12 packed tight. Not sure about the demand for squares meriting holding onto or selling the bamford. Never a bit of bother with it having said that and 65Hp is plenty (probably a fair bit less HP would be fine aswell).

I know the place. They charge 30c/square bale which is v reasonable.
