Most of U2 had classics at some point. Bono had a Bristol, as well as a tacky blinged up Cortina, a BMW 2002, and a Morse style Mk II Jag. Edge had an Anglia years back and still has his old Merc coupe afaik. Adam had a bevvy of old Aston Martins and classic Maseratis, and a Citroen SM.

So, they might be a bunch of tax avoiding has-beens, with an annoying singer, but they've great taste (Larry aside) in motors.

It was a Humber Super Snipe (60's vintage). He bought it from the artist Charlie Whisker (who I remember getting it in '85 or thereabouts). It's in the video for Clannad and Bono's 'In a lifetime'.

From looking at "Reeling in the Gears", some of the stand out owners for me are: (Year of interview in brackets)

Rory Gallagher (93) a 1969 Bristol 410 Hornet, his two favourite cars are the Citroen Light 15 and the Hudson Terraplane! (yes the man is a God!)

Eamonn Andrews (86) 1970 280SE 3.5 reg 628 PZO which he had restored in the early 80's. Anyone know where this car is now?

Dickie Rock (87) 1964 Rolls Siver Cloud II, reg VNI 418, purchase in 1975.

That W116 is owned by a chap called Dave Lawlor (of Fibbers) and was put up for auction late last year but didn't raise anything significant. Far as I know he still has it.

Bono also had a 280 SL which was bought by Tony McMahon (of Johnny Foxs) in the late 80's. Reg was 666 SZI if I remember right. First auto and first Mercedes I drove.

Something about publicans and Bono's ex cars!?!

EDIT: found article on the W116

Saw The Edge in his Merc coupe on Tara Street a few years back.

Isn't there some bloke who does a TV property show who drives around in a silver birch DB5/6?

Ruari Quinn's fat-cat brother Locklain drives a bunch of classics including a navy Ferrari 275 GTS (I think).

Although he died far too young I'll have you know that Rory Gallagher is/was not "Z list". He would have no interest in the classification either way but he is one of the most respected musicians of his genre that ever lived.

I overheard a couple of lads in the merc club discussing that car at Terenure. I think it is owned by a collector and is a "known" car alright, But I cant be sure. Our meet is next week, might ask one of the lads and get back to ya.

    As for celebs,
Dave Duffy (Leo Fair City) has a 90ish Celica, and I think he had a 70s Z650 Kwak too till recently (its a classic :))

And my mate recently sent a 230CE off to be parted out:(, and Johnny Logan was on the tax book!:pac:

Celebs...?? I gotta get out more.......

MercMad if he is on here may know about Eamonn Andrews Merc?

For the record, if it was a '70 car, it would have been PZO 628 - 628 PZO would have been issued in '81.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,003 ✭✭✭bijapos

Its definitely a W108, the picture of him and the car is here in front of me. he says in the 1986 interview that he found it in the West Midlands "four or five years ago", which would make it ca 1981 so I guess he imported it himself.

The car was up on blocks when he found it, had very little mileage but had a lot of rust so he out plenty of money into it to get it fixed up. Seems he had a 1960 Merc that he bought new previous to that for over 20 years.

PZO 628 would be 05/68-03/69 according to wiki.

I'd think PZO 628 would be 1968/9; I had RZO 700 and that was early 1969.

    Edit: bijapos got there first!

..........yes I recall the car well. Its IS PZO 628 (though it wont show up on the checker sites) and is a 1969 W111 3.5 which he bought new, dark green metallic. He lived nearby and I used to ogle the car every Sunday when he parked outside the church.

I have heard two stories about the car, both reliable sources, but unfortunately both conflicting.

The chap I bought my own W111 Coupe from said that he also owned a dark green one back in the 80's and someone left a note on it asking him if it was for sale. It wasn't but he contacted the guy anyway, who claimed he was in some, then unknown rock band. After some messing, my man pulled out and hear sometime later that the chap bought an identical car from Eamon Andrews. The chap in question was The Edge.

The Edge used in, and it would be seen around Dublin for many years, though I also believe he had another one.

One source says he took it with him to the UK and used it around London briefly before having work done and then storing it, where it remains.

The other source agrees that The Edge owns it but it is in Ireland in terrific condition, stored by a collector, not used..............but he has never seen it.

Either way it looks as it hasn't seen the light of day since before 1993.

If anyone has a picture of it or knows more please add more info.

This article is from 1986, the reg is clearly 628 PZO, it could be an import. I presume when he says West Midlands he means that area of the UK and not Ireland and he says in the article he got the car around 1981 which would be right as that reg is end of 81 Dublin. Could be a coincidence though an unlikely one. Interesting article all the same.

Yep, definitely an '81 UK import - before '87, second-hand imports were assigned the next (new) available registration.

Car still existed when I seen it on Dame St a couple of years ago

Larry Mullen Jnr is into his Harleys, but I'm sure he owns a couple of cold Mercs too. In fact one of them might have been in the 'Sweetest Thing' video.

Adam Clayton used to have a Citroen DS...
