The European Youth Olympics started today in Trabzon, Turkey.

-Grainne Moynihan ran a brilliant new PB in the girls 400m of 55.31, the 7th fastest time overall in the heats, but missed out on the final by one place (was faster than the 2 automatic qualifiers from one of the heats).
-Greg O'Shea qualified for the semi finals of the boys 100m with an excellent run of 10.95.
-Aisling Croke finished 20th overall in the high jump with a leap of 1.65m.

Best of luck to all the Irish athletes competing in Turkey.

Outstanding performances at underage level this year, looking promising for the next number of years alright.

Just after watching Karl Griffin's 800m at:

    http://www.flotrack.org/coverage/239079-EYOF-Trabzon-2011/video/502258-800m-B-Final-Bronze-for-Karl

What a mature way to run an 800m race!

Last at the bell and still last with about 250m to go, he ran a super race. Definitely a video to show to other young athletes.

Well done to all of the team on such exceptional performances. Their success is a great motivation to athletes and coaches alike as they are familiar names and faces to many from years of attending National juvenile finals.

And well done to the clubs behind the athletes and to their coaches since many of these athletes are at the sport since a young age. You will find many references to Mark English and Ruari Finnegan on AAI results pages from when they were 9 or 10 years old, e.g. http://www.athleticsireland.ie/JUV_2003/U11B/03XCCIND.HTM and its fantastic to see such talent being nurtured to the extend that both are now 2 of the best in Europe. Well done everyone!
