Asperger Syndrome Diagnosis in Adults

Hi, I am aware there are other threads in relation to this topic but I would like some advice about getting a diagnosis of Asperger's or other possible high-functioning Autism Spectrum Disorders.

I'm currently seeing a psychiatrist for treatment for depression. I've been taking my medication as normal but I want to bring up the subject that I may possibly have Aspergers. I've been doing research for years and I feel that I have met most, if not all, the criteria needed for a diagnosis. I really don't want to seem like I'm self diagnosing but when all the evidence is there to support what I feel it's very hard to ignore. I struggle daily with the problems associated with this condition and I really feel it would be best for my mental health to seek a diagnosis and treatment since at this point in time it hinders my ability to function day to day.

I really want to bring up this possibility with my psychiatrist. I want to be taken seriously but I'm concerned that because I can put quite a good act for seeming "normal" (as do a lot sufferers of this condition) I may not be taken seriously. I'm also concerned that many doctors are adverse to diagnosing Aspergers in adults.

I'd like some advice as to how to get the ball rolling with my psychiatrist at my next appointment. Any personal experience or difficulties in this area would be helpful. I would just like be heard by a professional. Even if the results say that I'm do not have Aspergers I would be content with this if I feel I have been properly listened to.

    (sorry about the rant)

Aspergers is a mild form of autism. It isn't known if it is genetic or how or why it affects some people but simply put it is a bit of strange wiring in the brain. Many people with Aspergers have considerable talent in maths or music. Diagnosis is best left to the specialist doctor, if an adult is diagnosed it was always there, since birth, so it must be relatively mild or it would have been noticed earlier.
