I don't see how they can charge anything, unless you use a different APN, the question is more about whether they try to block tethering via the Vodafone Live APN

For the moment, you're safe! Just use the live.vodafone.com APN and you're grand.

They can charge for it on the iPhone because Apple allow the networks to force the iPhone to use particular APNs for specific purposes. So tethering usage goes through a specific access point which they can then single out as tethering data and charge you extra for.

So that means any non-apple smartphones users are not being charged extra (or at a higher rate) for tethered connections?

Interesting, I wonder what the APN is for the tethered connections.

They have a couple of others like hs.vodafone.ie and isp.vodafone.ie

    may be one of those

Nope, you are not charged seperately, as Vodafone have no way of forcing specific APN's for particular uses on Android - at least for now. Saying that however the Live APN is not fully open so you might have some issues with tethering if you do try.

The official APN for tethering is office.vodafone.ie. DO NOT try this without a tethering bundle as it is VERY expensive!!!

Thanks - I have tried tethering with Vodafone on 2 android phones (Nexus one and HTC desire) - both set to use APN live.vodafone.com. it works fine and nothing strange on the bill...yet :)

Bit of a rip off for the iphone users!

Sorry for dragging up an old thread, but I got burned with tethering, and not on an iPhone. In fact it was vodafone's own brand V845. I'm on the vodafone simply for €20, and nowhere does it say that I'm going to get ripped off with tethering. In fact, it says it's a 99c a day, because I don't have an addon.
    Vodafone Simply
    Learn more about your plan

    Vodafone Simply
    Costs outside Monthly bundle
    Calls to landlines 30c
Calls to other mobile networks 30c
    Texts 11c
    Data charges 99c per day

    Charges for calling abroad
    Roaming costs
    Other call charges
The 99c a day is a link to this:
Service fee: Up to €0.99 per day

Whether you're on Prepay or Pay Monthly, you can get Mobile Internet and email for a service fee of €0.99 per day for the 50MB daily allowance. Then it's 0.1c per KB (or €1 per MB) thereafter.
Pay Monthly: Subscribe for €9.99 a month

You can sign up for our Mobile Internet and email pack and get Mobile Internet access for €9.99 per month.

Or switch to Perfect Choice Access Plus and get a generous download limit
    .

I got onto vodafone, and got a rubbish response, and fed the line" it's on our site". I was sent a .bmp of the place where it gives this info:

    www.vodafone.ie/iphone/help/tethering.

(at the time of posting this, that link gives the oh so familiar error on the vodafone.ie site)

But, why the f**k would I visit that part of the site with an Android phone? It's a iPhone specific part of the site. I checked well across the site, and it only mentions the iPhone.
The data bundle in your price plan doesn't include data used when your iPhone is connected as a modem - but we have great value tethering bundles if you want to use tethering regularly.
    Pay monthly 1GB - €9.99
    Pay monthly 10GB - €19.90
    Prepay 30 day 5GB - €20.00
    Business 1GB - €8.26 ex.VAT
    Business 10GB - €16.45 ex.VAT

You can buy an add on:

    Online in My Vodafone
    At any Vodafone store
    Or by calling 1907

If you do use tethering without an add on, it can be expensive. For example, Perfect Choice Access Plus pay monthly customers will pay 2c per kb for the first 512kb and 2c per MB thereafter – so the first 1MB costs €10.25 and the first 1GB costs €30.71.

    Or
Tethering is Apple's term for using your iPhone as a modem, to connect your computer to the internet via Vodafone's cellular data network. Use a tethering data bundle to get the best value with iPhone.

I can't find anything on the site that mentions the high charges of tethering with an Android phone. Maybe it was Vodafone' software added to the rom that set it up, but again there's no mention of this anywhere. If it's there, it's well buried somewhere. I'm pretty f**ked with this, and not finished with it yet.
