anyone doing this, have any idea whether its hilly / flat / what its like... im under pressure to do it from a mate and as usual i dont really have the long mileage done for it..did the ballina half on a whim, and havent run past 10k since and id say ive only done 2 or 3 10ks , mostly 5s and 7s.. and its on in 2 weeks .. could really do without it being hilly..

I can't see it being totally flat. Some gentle hills if memory serves from the last time I drove around there. Nice little route if they get the weather.

I mapped the route in geolives and its saying c. 230m climb. It rises to a max of c. 70m from a low of c. 7m. with some ups and downs.

Only a couple of "nice hills", 2 imparticular.

I THINK off the top of my head you are looking at max of 5 hills, the rest of the route is nice.

Good luck to all doing it, can't do it due to injury.

excellent..now to get rid of this dose of tonsilitis..tempted to run it out , might not be my wisest move :)

I would say that it's going to be a tough half marathon, not a lot of flat on the route at all, pretty much up and down for most of it I think. I'm sure they are all tough, but the Louisburgh to Westport one in September would be easier anyways if your tonsilitis doesn't clear in time.

I would like to do it, but its too close to Gaelforce for me, and I am quite prone to injuries when running that distance. Not worth the risk.

I've run that route many times. The first few miles (assuming anti-clockwise) would be fairly flat, though not totally. The remainder would be a bit more hilly, though nothing too crazy. If you want to do a flatter half marathon then wait till Sept and the annual Louisburgh to Westport race is on along the coast. That's quite a fast course. Odd that there's two half mars. in such a small place and only weeks apart

didnt know there was one from westport to louisburgh so that could be worth looking at...had quite sore feet after the ballina half.. but i think thats down to my runners needing replacing otherwise i wasnt too bad at all...i need to be getting out this week to do a decent run by the weekend at the latest so if throat doesnt clear then westport/louisburgh it may be ..week before achill roar though..id have similar concerns as you have with gaelforce..

It is, the MRT is always the 1st weekend in September, but the event calender now is so cluttered, it was probably hard to find a date when there wasn't something on, but having 2 in such a short space of time is bad as people will more than likely only do one, and the MRT one is likely to suffer possibly.

I made that mistake last year, I suffered in Roar as a result, and I only did the sport.

i always only do the sport distances.. i prefer racing the shorter distances to suffering the longer ones...not that my finishing times would indicate to anyone but me that im racing...

Not running this but I basically ran the route as a training run while down there for the weekend a couple of weeks ago (started and finished 350m off course). Think they're running it the same direction as I went (clockwise) - if so then the first 5 miles are the toughest. Fairly undulating for the first few miles so can be tricky to get into a nice rhythm - nothing too daunting though.

Here's the garmin detail of the run:

    thats brilliant , thanks
was at the doc yesterday, and hes warned me off running whilst recovering from this..so if i dont get back to it by the weekend and get at least one decent run in im gonna have to miss it and go for the next one... 6.5k race last nite very local to me and for a fiver..was seriously tempted but common sense ( and the better half ) prevailed.. thank god cos im feeling pretty crappy this morning.. ah well hopefully itl all clear by the weekend....funny how you can get so into a race you had no intention of doing up to a couple of weeks ago..now that it looks like i might not be able to youd swear i was aiming to do it all year...
now i need this thing to clear quickly so i can get back on track for the warriors run..
