So, marriage is now legal in NYC. YAY!

Click for sweet stories and even sweeter pics!

My favourite has to be the elderly lesbian couple married on Sunday morning:
In New York City, Phyllis Siegel, 77, and Connie Kopolev 85, were the first couple to be married on Sunday morning. Koplev arrived at the marriage bureau in a wheelchair, but stood with the assistance of a walker during the ceremony. Siegel took Koplev’s hand and they grasped the walker together as they made their vows. When they emerged from the bureau, the couple, who have been together 23 years, were met with raucous cheers by the waiting crowd. Koplev, seated in her wheelchair, thrust their marriage certificate into the air, and Siegel told reporters, "I am breathless. I almost couldn't breathe. It's mind-boggling. The fact that's it's happening to us — that we are finally legal and can do this like everyone else."

Now that NY has gay marriage it'll be interesting to see what the gay divorce rate is.

I'd imagine the same or slightly less... considering that a lot of the couples marrying at the moment have been together for 20 and 30 years already... I think they're probably pretty solid, no?

Time will tell if gay marriages are more or less successful than heterosexual marriages in the long term. However, some data is beginning to emerge. According to Wikipedia, studies in Great Britain and Denmark found gay couples have lower divorce rates than heterosexual couples, though a study found gay couples in Sweden and Norway had higher divorce rates than heterosexual couples. According to U.S. News and World Report, states that allow gay marriage tend to have a lower overall divorce rate. In 2009, states that didn’t allow gay marriage had a divorce rate of 50.3 percent, and states that allowed gay marriage had an overall divorce rate of 41.2 percent. People in states that allow gay marriage also tend to marry later and have higher education levels.
I doubt we will see much of a difference between the two in future, but to be honest judging the merit of gay partnerships compared to straight ones by divorce rates is fairly flawed, there are a whole host of variables that could easily skew the figures, education levels and religious perspectives would be two at the moment, these effect how likely a gay person is to be out and also effect peoples position on marriage. We would have to see true equality in society before such things can be truly assessed.

It's unfortunate for the push towards marriage equality here that this came at a time when the media had so much else to be focusing on, it could have spurred some conversation, as well of course as showing a true image of gay marriage to the sheltered in our society.

Erm, I'm talking about stats collated for gay couples in the same way as for straight couples, that is to say not focusing only on those married within a specific couple of days.

I understand that, I was simply pointing out that contrary to popular opinion, gay folks don't have more of a tendency than straight couples to be unable to commit long term or anything.

A general google for 'gay divorce rates' comes up with a fair few articles pointing out that States in the US which allow gay marriage actually are enjoying LOWER divorce rates since bringing in legislation to legalise gay marriage.

In the Netherlands, who legalized gay marriage in 2011, gay and straight divorce rates are at 1%.

I don't know why people get all antsy about divorce rates, sure if a relationship breaks down past reconciliation, then that's what happens. It's better than staying in an awful relationship that makes you miserable or depressed.
