Audio problem while using skype

I've been using skype regularly for the past few months and never had any problems with it. But over the past couple of days, the person on the other end can't hear me (although I can hear them perfectly).

I've followed the advice given on skype.com (re. checking your audio settings etc), but to no avail. I've played around with the settings and have repeatedly made the test calls, but when the recording is played back to me, all I can hear is a crackling sound.

Has anyone experienced this problem? Or can you offer me any advice?

Keep in mind that I'm not tech-savvy at all , so simple language would be appreaciated:)

    Thanks in advance

Check your mic/cables and check your drivers in Device Manager. Right click on My Computer, go to Properties, then I think it's the Hardware tab, then DM. If there's a yellow question mark on your audio device symbol you should try and sort out the drivers. How does the mic work with other programs, something other than Skype? You said you've checked the settings so I presume they're not set to mute.

Might be obvious but try using your mic & headphone ports and the back of your pc or even a different USB port.

Is it a laptop you have?

    Thanks for the replies.
I tried everything you said but still no joy.
I consulted skype.com and tried to follow the advice. The first thing they said to do is to download the most recent version. I did this, but now skype crashes every time I log in.
The next thing they suggest is to update windows, but every time I do this it says “Windows update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer” (which I did, but it keeps saying the same thing).
Then it suggests updating your Windows firewall settings. I tried to do this, but as soon as I get to the step of selecting “This program path” and clicking browse there isn’t any sign of the Skype.exe file. So I hit a brick wall).
I also un-installed it and re-installed it again. But no luck.
Anyway, because I’m clueless regarding technology, I took it to a laptop service place, prepared to fork out the money (for what I was sure would be a simple click of a few buttons). But they couldn’t fix it! I’m currently living in a non-English speaking country, so they couldn’t explain to me why they couldn’t fix it……..
Anyway, if anyone has any enlightening advice, it would be much appreciated.
