Hi all little bit of a story behind this,

Was trying to speed up my uncles laptop (very old) but it's for work, it's running vista and has 1Gb ram so couldn't do much but delete unused items and so on.

Was working a bit faster so gave it back only problem now is that it won't allow access to ye Internet via wireless, just getting limited or no connection so checked it via ipconfig and it's not getting an ip address and it says that the media is disconnected.

Found the driver and it needed updating so got off the vendor site and put it on via USB, that didn't work so un installed and reinstalled and still no joy, new icons on the tray now saying that there is no( and the name of the driver) bu it's different to the one hat was on it?

Any help would be great, or if I've left something out just ask and I'll post back

    Cheers

Is it showing a list of Networks that you can connect to?

You may need to simply choose your network and enter the password for the router

Also are you using windows or intel to connect to the wifi? You may need to right click on the wifi icon and enable it if it's not picking up networks

Can you not go to network options in the Control panel and see them there by clicking on "Connect to a network" or is it a case of once you do, nothing is showing up.

You may have just disabled the wifi - there's normally a switch on laptops on the side where you can switch it on, give that a check I'd say as it's a bit odd that nothing's showing up for you.

    Just an update,

Everything is in the correct order and everything is on,

In device manager the wifi device says that it can not load the driver as it is corruptor missing,

So I uninstalled and reinstalled it and still nothing just says that there is a fault

    Any ideas

Well I'm still at it. I can now see the wireless connection in network centre but it just keeps saying that it cant connect to any networks but the signal strength from the wireless card is strong,

Got the update as I used the LAN connection

    If any can help please

Have you tried connecting directly to the port instead of using wireless and seeing if your pc can connect that way i.e. pick up an IP address?

Yep i used the port to try get the updates to go threw which they did.

    but sill the same problem.

Would restoring the system from an old saved point be worth giving it a go?

Yeah it would but it'd probably bring back that old driver.

If you could connect through a wired connection then I'd be looking at the router next to be honest - try resetting it, perhaps clearing the password etc. and seeing can you connect then.

Try connecting to a mates wireless to confirm whether it's the PC or Router for definite

Another thing is check when the PC last created a restore point - it's an old PC so it could set you a long way back, you could lose files etc.

Ok so starting to loose the plot with this ha,

There are several wireless devices in my area and it's not picking up any of them.
One difference is that the light for the wireless switch on the body of the laptop is not coming on anymore so I'm starting to think of a hardware issue with the wireless card.
If I back up all the files now and do a system restore should eleminate any thing I could have done between working and not working
