    Hi there

Please move this post if its in the wrong place - couldn't find where best to put it.

My sister and husband are moving to UK with their Irish registered car for forseeable future. Their car insurance expires before they go so they want to insure their car with a UK car insurance provider and import the car into the UK. Any idea's how I can go about enquiring about getting their car insured temporarily here and over there before they change the plates?

All the UK insurance company websites have 0800 numbers which I can't call from Ireland? Any advice much appreciated.

    Thank you

UK insurance companies will not entertain a quote on an Irish reg vehicle. Your sister & husband will need to go through the DVLA process for reigstering the car in the UK in order to get a UK plate before the insurance companies will quote them. The DVLA have clear guidelines on what is required depending on what type of vehicle it is and which market it was designed for (left vs. right hand drive), and it'll cost somewhere around the £100 mark, give or take, to get it processed. That's excluding any garage/fitting work required obviously

They could see about a short-term insurance renewal (three to six months) which would also give them time to get established and see what their motoring needs are in the UK. They could then either keep the car and re-register it, or get something new.

edit: DVLA section on vehicle imports - linky

When we moved to the UK with our Irish reg car, the only company that would insure us was Quinn Direct UK. But that before all the bother! Worth a try anyway.

They have an international phone number here.... http://www.quinn-direct.co.uk/company/contact.html
