The version makes a big difference depending on what you are using it with: http://www.audioholics.com/education/display-formats-technology/understanding-difference-hdmi-versions

If it's just v1.0 then €2 is not a bargain

But it's gold plated. Must give a great picture.

Unless both your devices have gold plated sockets with I'm 99.999% sure they don't the "gold" will do more harm then good. Since it will corrode the sockets.

it's 1.3a and I got one there after Christmas, not a bother out of it. All the €2 shops have them. I saw them there late last week

I had no idea they couldn't market the cables by hdmi standard. I find that quite annoying. The different versions add new features. Some bad, some good.

I am definitely not a person who buys overpriced cables. I only asked what version it was to find out what data it can be used to transfer.

You should always try to have the sockets and the cable type match but it's not essential. The corrosion will take a while too actually happen.

    HDMI is a digital cable

In digital terms the picture is sent or NOT sent. There is nothing else! It's all 1's and 0's

Gold plating was used in analog cables (SCARTS) to better conduct signals and give clearer pictures.

In the digital world you don't need that!!! Gold plating is just another work for rip-off...

If the connection is on your monitor/tv and whatever you're plugging in then it'll work with anything.

The HDMI standards body have mad a complete fcuk up of the cable standards, which is a real pity because one of the core principles behind HDMI was to standardise and simplify AV cables.

Banning cables being advertised as v1.3/v1.4/etc compatible is imho an attempt to put that right, or at least an attempt to get rid of something which is entirely misleading. You don't need a cable labelled as v1.4 compatible to get most of the features introduced in v1.4, a normal v1 cable will work fine. Conversely most of the cables labelled as v1.4 compatible don't support all the features of v1.4, they probably don't support anything a standard v1 cable does not.

Certain features, such as ethernet support introduced in v1.4, require a specially compatible cable, but you need one marked as ethernet compatible not just v1.4.

(fyi, pretty much any HDMI cable you're likely to com across is what this guide refers to as "High Speed HDMI Cable")

    Good article here...

Always worth chucking at a Harvey Norman sales guy trying to sell you Monster cables for 80 quid!
