Lake Como /Lake Garda experience?

I'm thinking of going to Italy 2nd week Sept and was looking for advise.
We're looking for a quiet holiday, like to walk about and shop and eat out.
Is it expensive in these regions to eat out? (relative to Irish prices for instance) I've read mixed reviews for these areas regarding restaurant service with many people saying service was poor with waiting staff rude and food standards/choice not too good either. Also any comment on climate at that time of year - would we have a fair chance of sun?
    Thanks for any advise.

I was at Lake Garda mid September and it was about 18 degrees, but I caught the last of the season. You might still get some proper sun. It will more than likely be warm but breezy.

We stayed in a hired villa so we did barbeque a bit. We were near the Gardonne Reviera (west bank), but there are other villages all along the Lake region, the restaurant prices would vary, the ones not on the waterfront or not in the main towns would be more reasonable. In saying that the food was good, even if the service is not. You can also cross by ferry from one side of the lake to the other if you hire a car, and experience both sides, which are remarkably different.

On the east side, there is an olive oil museaum and wine estate which does wine-tastings. We had a lovely stay. The Italians are very child friendly.
