For recreational use or...? Either way, id be saying no :) Posing as an operational ambulance will get you in serious trouble!

If it is for recreational daily use, you may and i mean MAY be able to purchase a retired ambulance at auctions etc but to drive it it needs to be completely free of any signs that it was an emergency vehicle eg: Siren, lights, stickers etc and even then you run the risk of people running to you for help.

To drive an ordinary ambulance you need your Emergency Vehicle Licence, more than an average drivers licence. I say is it really important??? If not.. think twice. A future of nothing but trouble with it otherwise

Wow, must say I'm impressed with the response.. I should probably have mentioned that I'm hoping to get an ambulance in order to take part in 'the mongol rally', a race from the goodwood racetrack in England to Ulaanbaatar in Mongolia. The idea is to donate the vehicle upon reaching the finishline. It's apparently common for people to bring ambulances or fire engines as these are highly useful for the Mongolians. As for legality, I'm working on that bit.

p.s. I must say I feel very well welcomed. Cheers!

See if anyone in our Voluntary Emergency Services forum knows of any ambulances that are no longer in use/operational?

there is no Emergency Vehicle License, nor is any training WHATSOEVER given to Ambulance Drivers (my wife is a Paramedic)

There is also no requirement to remove blues and twos. Its using them inapproriately that would bring the Gards down on you.

Knifey_Spoonie is the guy to talk to about this, but as he's on his way to Mongolia in an Ambulance at the moment, he might not be on for a while.....

My cousin bought a ambucamper in the UK a couple of years back. Still has the blue lights on the grille. It runs but needs work. If you take the camper bits out of the back its basically an ambulance again. I can pass you on his number f you want. I'm sure it could be got for very little.

Have to looked to see how maintenance will be carried out on it once your gone?

The Donedeal link has a unimog, that or a Landrover might be good options?

You can get emergency driving classes. Suppose it depends if she works for the HSE or a private entity. I thought the HSE trained some staff in emergency driving. Otherwise how are they expected to safely get to an incident quickly?

I keep my Licence in a little compartment on my sunvisor.....so i can get it out quickly in an Emergency.
I'm afraid I don't really know anything about the "average drivers licence".
Is it to do with the actual size of the licence, or the Driver's ability to drive in an average manner....:confused:

Ambulance Driving is done on normal personal licences B1,C1,D1 depending on their weight and occupancy . There is no emergency licence.

slightly ot but i have heard some of the last transits they used as ambulances were not able for the weight and stress and the chassies cracked. think they changed to merc's.

still using them alongside the mercs in Cork.. apparently the local "back up" Transit is preferred to the front line Merc
