Trundled along this evening behind a Discovery 1 (V8i) wearing ZV plates.

Anyone offer an explanation for this? What's the "law" with ZV plates?

    Cheers

The rule and what's happening are two different things it seems. There was/is a 99 discovery on dondeal with zv plates last week ! This is obviously totally illegal as the discoverys weren't around at that time but it's happening and it is not doing the true Vintage/Classic car industry any favours :confused:

There's a lot of these land rover "hybrids" around... Here in Ireland , the chassis number is king... If the chassis is vintage, then you can bolt whatever you like to it.
So, hypothetically, a modern engine/body/ interior can be grafted to a vintage chassis.
As a land rover is one such vehicle that can be dismantled to the level of a bare chassis, it's perfect for such " modifications"

I'm sure someone will give a fuller answer, but the discovery can be built up on the chassis on something older. The VIN is tied to chassis and that's what the reg points to.
I'm sure someone will correct my mistakes soon, but that's the jist of it.

isnt it a fact though that first bit of a Landrover to rot will be the chassis and the bodies go on forever?

Surely the reg number is tied to the spec and engine type of the vehicle. A petrol 78 v8Range Rover that has now become a 2.5 diesel Discovery !!!!:confused: Even Keith Barry couldnt't do that :P

All you need is a tax book (see DoneDeal - one guy is always hunting for *surprise, surprise* pre-80 LR tax books) chassis plate and rivet gun you can then evade NCT, VRT and Road Tax.

Discovery bodies don't go on forever though!

What is it that's so great about old Range Rovers?

They have cheap tax and no NCT?

I am long time LR addict - all petrol too - they cost a fortune to run and go wrong often. In the UK everyone used to bleat about getting a pre '72 motors... to save 200 quid road tax - 4 pounds a week. At sub 20mpg, 4 pounds a week is peanuts... it's the same as the petrol used to go to the pub and back!

I am a major land rover fan, these people are extracting the michael, are not car enthusiasts, and just want to save money.
They will ruin it for all of us.
They are abusing the vintage rule, we all rely on to get our automotive fix. I believe this practice has already been noticed, and something is in the pipeine.

Agreed. The lack of NCT is the problem - nobody to check the vehicle status. In the UK you can make hybrids motors, but there are clear rules about the sourcing of the parts.

Yes there are piss takers there too... but they all get caught evetually. No real enthusiast will buy a "Rebuilt 1959 Land Rover - now runs TD5 and looks like a Defender"..

Plus where do all the donor cars come from? Probably stolen.

Lots of stuff like that on dumb deal , eg 1978 2.8i capris , a softtop 1976 tr7, various jaguars, these sellers are not into the classic car game for the fun of it , only to make a quick buck, problem is they seem to be incedibly stupid and ignorant of the cars they are selling.
