    Hey! I'm new on this yoke and there's probably loads of similar questions like this already .... but I'd have to be awkward and not use the searchbar! :p

    Anyhoo.... I'm researching universities atm (going into 6th year in September) and I'm pretty sure I either want to go to either Galway or Maynooth.

    They're both fantastic universities.... and I'm pretty certain I'd get a good education where ever I go... but lets be honest - as a young wan like myself all I really want to know is:
    Which is better for the craic? :D

    What are the student bars like in Galway/Maynooth? Cost of going out?... Societies? Sports Clubs?... even cost of living... etc. etc

    any information you have on any aspect of either institutions would be very much appreciated!
    Thanks :)

    You'll probably struggle to get any info on NUIM here but NUIG is pretty good.

    Good to see you're focusing on the important things like bars, socialising, rent etc and not the actual quality of the education you're going to get.

    Lots of bars, very socialable lifestyle, plenty of clubs/socs to keep ya busy, and rent can vary depending on what you want. Student accommodation can go from 90-110 or so a week. Other accommodation can go down to 50-60 a week at the lowest, depends what you want and where you want it.

    My advice, find out what you want to do in college and see which college offers the best education in that, all socialising and clubs etc are trivial.

    Judging from friends in NUIM, Maynooth only has one nightclub, Mantra. It also has a few late bars. However you still can't really compare it to Galway. I mean Galway is a city (although not the biggest) and Maynooth is just a town.

    I'd go further actually;

    Maynooth = Nice, Safe place to spend a few years and get some degree in something pointless.

    Galway = Vibrant, Alive place to go and grow and live and get a good degree and a serious hangover at various stages :D

    Can't speak for Galway but went to NUIM for degree and most of my PhD so can talk about that :)

    Social life is very good. There's the SU bar on campus and then there's the town itself which has about 5 bars in the town centre (including Mantra) and then the Glenroyal hotel which used to have a nightclub (maybe still does?). There's other bars on the outskirts of the town but there's always house parties going on.

    The fact that the town is small is good because it means that you can quickly trawl the pubs to find your mates or if you're in one pub and hear that the craic is better in another or your mates are somewhere else, you only have to stumble a few feet to get there. :D

    As for the comment on quality of degrees, spoken like someone who doesn't yet have a degree :) When you get into the big bad world of work you soon discover that where you got your degree isn't all that important. I've shared a house here in Cambridge with someone who has a first in Genetics from the University of Cambridge and I really don't rate her degree at all. I also employ Cambridge and Oxford graduates and once again don't think their qualifications are any better than anyone else I employ. The opportunities they can make use of through networking in Cambridge and using the Cambridge alumni to source excellent jobs, are outstanding but the degrees themselves are not really as amazing as the university would like you to think!

    Galway for the craic, Maynooth for the priesthood.
