    Hi, need some advise.
I had a mid year review on Friday afternoon, 3 hrs long.

My boss told me that she does not think I will reach my target for the year, and has basically asked me to step down from my position.

I have had no indication until Friday that there was a problem, no one told me that I was going about things the wrong way. I got a bonus at Christmas, no one else on my team did, and I also got a 3% pay rise last week, and now I have this crap.

My boss have to give me a chance to turn it around and to make a effort. I will not be forced to step down, by law they have to give me a chance.

    Anyone any thoughts on this?

    There is no union.

That you got a pay rise last week despite apparently ' underperforming ' really does not seem to make sense - did your boss offer an explanation for this ?

Seen it before...they have someone earmarked for your job and they want you out...They will make your life a misery and find a way of getting you to leave

No Delancey, I will question this tomoro with my boss. I also got a Bonus at christmas too, only 3 people out of the 49 there got one! It doesn't make sense to me at all.

I think your boss is looking for a reason for you to move off or step down.
The company wants to save money. It seems you are going to be the fall guy here after getting a bonus and a 3% salary increase which no one else is getting.
Why are they only bringing it to your attention now about your targets?
Do they want to go back to a lower grade ie do the job your doing at the moment for lower money?
I would put a good fight in work - go to your boss as often as possible and ask how your doing with your targets, email them as often as possible re targets and work in general.
I would print off all emails. Keep a note of everything said or done to you over the next few months in work. If work decides to let you go you can go the legal route.
    Good luck.

Thanks Okiss, appreciate the reply. This is the first situation I have had like this. I get the impression they want me to step down, but I won't go without a fight.

Any chance you would join a union, might be a good idea just in case? They are experts at handling situations like this and there insight can be invaluable and also their representation can be enough to warn employers bullying you is not going to fly.

Can pm you details for a good one if you`d like- just in case I don`t work for them, no affiliation?

The company doesn't have to deal a union, so don't assume that they'll be able to do much more for you than lighten your wallet every month.

Obviously, don't step down and make things easy for them. As others have said, clearly you have performed in the recent past as you've received a bonus and pay increase.

This is good advice. Engage with your boss - if this whole thing is a surprise to you, then you must feel that you've been reaching your targets up until now? If you have, then this should be easily documented. If you haven't, then they should be putting a performance improvement plan into place (although you should always take the initiative in this event). Arrange a meeting with your manager and get specific examples of where you're not meeting, or likely to not meet your targets and agree some actions on how to address this.

This sounds a bit vague though - what do you mean by this?

    Agree with the advice above.
    • Engage with management to meet goals, do not agree to any penalties if goals are not met.
    • Keep detailed records a diary would help.

OP , I know someone who was in a somewhat similar position to you - being placed on 'review ' over sick days , everything pointed to an effort by management to manage them out of the company - this crap went on for months but she kicked back and made it clear she was not going to roll over and die .
Company backed down and thereafter offered a decent redundancy deal , perhaps your employer is seeking to shed staff and avoid paying redundancy ?

Have to agree with the others. It doesn't add up. Theres some other reason other than performance.
