M50 madness

So I was driving on the M50 at lunch time today heading south bound and just passed the cherry wood exit when the traffic came to a complete standstill..I think this was to do with the crowds heading to the air show in Bray today..When I noticed in my re-view mirror some one in a range rover decided that they had enough of traffic on the m50 and drove up the ramp towards cherry wood driving in the direction of on coming traffic that was joining the m50 from cherrywood...complete madness..How can anybody drive on the wrong side of a "motorway"..bloody crazy considering the cars driving down the ramp are building up speed to join the "motorway"!!!Luckily enough there was nobody coming down the ramp at the time.

If I hadn't of been driving I would have recorded the incident because I could believe what I was seeing in my mirror.

The driver did turn their hazard lights on because that makes it OK.

This is the worst I've seen on Irish roads..anybody seen worse?

I saw a guy reversing back in the outside lane of the M1 a few years ago to
get something that looked like had fell off his roof rack.
Think it was a bag or something cant remember.

I could'nt believe what I was seeing at the time.

You never know maybe the person needed to go see a doctor or get to a hospital in that case you d have to do something.:D However doubt that fact . A person in a chelsea horse is entitled to do these on our roads:)

Ive often came from Loughlinstown direction out onto M11 car in front of me doing 60 kmh pulling out onto on coming traffic.

Only during the week seen a convoy of 2 tractors pulling trailers on M11.

Ha yeah - I think that either they didn't have road tax or insurance and thought that there was cops down the road and took the chance!

But thats another thing I also came across a tractor on the m50 near the dundrum exit heading north bound.. Are tractors allowed on the m50 now that the speed limit is 100kmph?

If I was driving a range rover paying for tax and insurance would be only a minor thing:) As for the question of tractors allowed on motorway with speed limit being 100 is a good one

I have seen the Gardai do this in an unmarked black land rover if they are delayed in traffic n.b. delayed in traffic, never mind an "emergency"

I wonder was it the same land rover?

A tractor would be allowed on a motorway if its maximum speed was greater than 50kmph...some tractors have a 60kmph box nowadays!

But even 60 in a 100 is quite dangerous!

The judge hung them up for him..:) He reminded me of a guy that lives near me that drives everywhere doing 40KPH..

Frightening to think there is plenty of drivers like him..

Speaking here as a truck driver that has driven all over europe, why does it only happen in Ireland that I have to slow down when traffic merges in front of
me on any motorway even when traffic is at a normal density.
Bear in mind a trucks speed limit is 80kph. Slip road to join motorway is to enable traffic to match the existing traffic as smoothly as possible.
People just don't seem to know that.

Would have thought that was one aspect of motorway driving that actually worked well on this fair land given the penchant for the middle lane. :)

Well until they include Motorway driving as part of the driving test - there is no point giving out about people who haven't a clue when it comes to Motorway rules and driving.
It just beggars belief that it isn't part of the test really.
Lack of enforcement is another issue, but that's a different kettle of fish.

Have seen guiy down the wrong direction on dual carriageway a few times and once was actually one night in car driven by American that did it.
The two other Irish guys and myself were screaming at him and he did turn at next opportunity.

Actually if they can do 50kph then AFAIK they are entitled to use motorway.
Also people need to know the M11/N11 stops being a motorway after 2nd Bray exit and is just dual carriageway all the way down to Ashford nearly.

    EDIT:
just remember passing combine harvester on the M11 a couple of years ago at around 9pm.
    Now that was pushing it.

    Again check rules.
Tractors capable of 50kph can use the road.
Also tractors can use Naas road out to Naas since it isn't actually a motorway and there is no alternative route.
Thus I could go on my old MF 135 doing about 20mph.

I once seen a fella on a motorbike easily doin about 160kph wearing only his helmet and a pair of shorts... if he came off the bike at that speed wearing only those he would have been cut to threads... very silly

I'll always remember the day I saw a guy reversing up the hard shoulder of the M7 because he'd missed the junction for the M9.

I remember seeing a Swedish guy do that on an airfield runway on his Blackbird.
He had shorts, boater shoes and t-shirt on and would get up to 170mph before braking.
Also used to arrive at airfield minus helmet with his aviator shades on.
This was Florida so not against the law.

Actually I have once seen a Garda car stopped in the inside lane beside car pulled over in hard shoulder on dual carriageway between Shannon and Bunratty.
And the guards are supposed to enforce careful driving.

Also just love the eejits that stop at dual carriageway entry filter lanes and wait for break in traffic.
They don't get the idea that you are supposed to be moving and join the traffic.

Was on the(very busy) M50 going to the Bray air show yesterday(which was very good I might add), and saw a load of idiots on the road.

    1.

Guy in a blue Fiesta in the middle lane doing about 60-70 kph between Firhouse and Dundrum. As we were behind him, waiting for a gap to overtake, another car had enough and went to undertake him.

Without warning, he swerved to the left and was inches from hitting the undertaking car. I don't think I've seen anything as close! As we were overtaking, I looked left to see that the gobshite was reading a map! It wasn't a booklet either, but a big fold out map all over the front of the car! There was a passenger too, who didn't appear to be helping.

    2.

Someone else in an older silver Volvo S40, tearing down the hard shoulder for ages, and pushing his way through a line of traffic at the exits so he could stay in the hard shoulder for his whole journey.

    I wish I was a Gard!

It's the simple bloody obvious things that annoy me, eg:

Muppets who don't start accelerating when going down the off ramp to join motorways, then they not only hold everyone up behind them at 60kph but they barge into motorway traffic at a snails pace causing a brake light tailback.

Muppets who never understood that the right lane of a motorway is the overtaking lane and not the sit there at 100kph holding everyone else up.

Muppets not planning their driving on a motorway and so they sit in the right lane unt they see their exit and then they brake, cut across two or three lanes, naturally holding everyone else up, so they can get to the off ramp.

As for stupid things on a motorway, I was once exiting the M4 at Maynooth going round the left hand exit curve when I had to swerve to avoid a woman driving the wrong way towards the motorway. I told her what she was doing (fairly politely actually) and she told me to fcukoff and mind my own business?????????

I saw an old woman driving up the worng way on the tallaght by pass like she pulled out of the on the run petrol station and headed towards the square. She was heading staright for me and i had to jump into the inside lane and beep and put on hazard light to warn vehicles behinde me!!

Another time i in traffic in blanchardstown stuck in horrible traffic, when i heard sirens blaring in the distance. Some motorists began driving up on the foot path to let the gardai through only to see the squad car pull up out side the station on the footpath and two gardai get out with bags of lunch for the station!!

Seen a load of mugs in a micra undertaking a car at junction 6, but they undertook them by going into the shoulder (i.e over the yellow line and were right beside the barrier)

    Mad stuff.
