    hunter_16,
I would go with the 223 for foxes. I think on a basis of performance, speed, flat trajectory, and cost, it is the best.

There are other rounds that fly faster and flatter but they cost too much.

I've seen what some of the lads on the boards are doing inside of 300ya with 223 and it is more than you'll ever need.

The 243 was originally designed for varmints but it is now used for larger game such as deer. They say it can be used on bear, elk, and big game, but I personally would not do so.

    My vote is the 223.

Before you make any decision, go price ammo and see how available it is in different bullet masses at a few shops.

Also, have you shot much? Or do you like to shoot a lot? If you plan on doing a lot of shooting, the 223 is the way to go.

Im realy asking on behalf of a shooting buddy. He has a .243 for deer. The 95 grain ssts are a bit expensive for fox. Fisma as you say a .223 is a dedicated foxing gun which is also cheap to shoot.

    Hunter_16,
I think the 223 is the best round for foxes. Give a read here for more about the 223.

When it comes to varmints, there are a lot of nice rounds: 204 Ruger, 22-250, 220 Swift, and so many more.

The problem you'll encounter in Ireland is availability of ammo and cost.

Is anyone in Ireland shooting the 204 Ruger? Has anyone seen this ammo for sale? If so, please advise.

Anyhow, the 223 is probably the best price to performance ration you're going to get. The 22LR is going to be much cheaper, but the performance hit you're going to take will be a lot to stomach.

The 243 will do the job grand, but the cost.

The 223 is readily available in Ireland and you can get it in a lot of different flavors: masses, brands,...

It's a bit quiet today. I imagine the lads will be back soon to throw in their two cents.

    Slan.

fisma why are you advising him re a 223 he has a 243 :p
58grn .243 superformance with a vmax bullets is what lads are using for fox it's nearly 22-250 velocity just short of 4000 fps

I use whatever comes to hand for mr Fox, I have used the 58gn Hornady stuff and its effective, it used to be a little cheaper than the 100gn stuff but it all seems to be the same price now.
The last Fox that I shot was with 100gn SP Rem Corelokt it did a good job and Mr Fox didn't go much further.

The 243. is a great all rounder for both fox and deer you have the option of both species unlike the 223....:D

Soooooo bored. It was 88°F the other day, at 5:30AM!

Took the Sako and the Howa out today and it monsooned as soon as I arrived at the range. Turned around and went home. Will try again tomorrow.

How much are they getting for a 20 round box of 204?

I misread the title. I thought the OP was questioning whether the 243 was a foxing round. Should really slow down and read things more carefully.
