Credit Union Death Insurance

My sister died in 2005. She left her estate between myself and my brother and sister. This included her house etc. all of which were sold and the money divided equally between us. Seperately she also had a Credit Union account with approx. €6,900 in it. She nominated me to be the benificary in the event of her death. When she died the Credit Union sent me a cheque for the amount she had on deposit and included a €1,500 death insurance they had on her, cheque total €8,400. My sisters solicitor wrote to me and asked me to return the €1,500 to him as he said this had to go through normal Probate. I sent a cheque for €1,500 back to the Credit Union stating my solicitor said I was'nt entitiled to the insurance, they sent it to him and it was included for Propate purposes and divided between the 3 of us. I thought this was very strange. Was I not entitled to keep the €1,500 insurance from the Credit Union?
