Signing off to travel for Medical Reasons

My brother is currently receiving Job Seekers benefit since the end of October. He was working for 15 years prior to this. At the start of September he has to travel abroad for a few months for an operation that we would wait 18 months for here. Firstly i was wondering how long would he be entitled to receive Job seekers…

My brother is currently receiving Job Seekers benefit since the end of October. He was working for 15 years prior to this. At the start of September he has to travel abroad for a few months for an operation that we would wait 18 months for here. Firstly i was wondering how long would he be entitled to receive Job seekers Benefit? Will it last until the end of August? Also when he returns will he have to wait 12 weeks to get social welfare again as he would have signed off voluntarily?? Thanks in Advance

If he is ill he should claim illness benefit for the length of time he will be unfit for work.http://www.citizensinformation.ie/en/social_welfare/social_welfare_payments/disability_and_illness/disability_benefit.html

There is a box on the weekly cert to tick if you are in hospital.First thing to do is see his GP.
