Buying a new car - discount?

Would anyone be able to offer any thoughts on the likely discount off the guide price for purchasing a new car (circa 20k) - straight deal, no trade-in? Just wondering what, if any, leeway might be a possibility.

    Brand new or second hand?

If brand new, what make and model? Is it in stock or a fresh order?

If second hand, how does the price compare to similar cars for sale in other garages?

What's a Kia Jute? What country are you in?

Not sure, maybe Drummerboy or R.O.R could give a good guideline, but my expectation would be that 10% would be good on that, maybe a little more if you took a car that's in stock with the dealer.

From what I've heard, the initial demand that was there when the Juke was launched has subsided and dealers are willing to do deals now. If it was a car in stock, I'd certainly be looking at the 10%. €1500 should still be possible even if it needs to be ordered from the factory

The model my sister is looking at is 20,470 list price (the mid range SV one with metallic paint included at 475 extra) so I think she was hoping for at least 2k off, preferably more. Just under 19k was the deal that was offered to her. I know she's not great at bargaining so I was hoping to be some help with the possibilities.
What is the deal with the added metallic paint - is this a good thing or just cosmetic?
Thanks for your help - much appreciated :)

Metallic will help resale. 90% of cars have it. There's plenty of Nissan garages. I'd go in, offer 18250 and take 18500 if it comes to it. If not, go to another Nissan dealer

Just under €19k is a much better deal than I was offered when I checked pricing on them last month.

Was that brand new and un-registered? If so, think it's time to have a word with my supplier

Yes, but we're talking €20 under, so not a deal breaker really. So it looks like 10% is not an option for a new car discount any more? Ah well, back to the drawing board ...

Would you give Charliecroker's advice a try, just to see how it goes?

Tried today and got nowhere :( Checked with another Nissan dealer and much the same price with no give. Maybe the margins on new cars aren't as good as they used to be - that or dealers aren't interested in dealing. She's looking at other new cars now but she is still really taken with the Jute. I'm not sure if she should actually be buying anything at all now or maybe waiting until the new year.

Did you call in and talk to them face to face or did you talk to them on the phone? You will not get their best price over the phone, the best negotiations have to be done face to face.

You won't get the best deal until you're actually ready to deal and the dealer knows you're ready to deal. Tell him as much and he may be willing to push a little bit further.

The dealer knows my sister is ready to deal - she was in the garage, had taken the test drive and indicated clearly that she was interested in buying. She has bought from this dealer before, so he knows she's good for the money. She was given the figure already mentioned and said that she would like to check it out with a relative (me). She even decided on the colour and the salesman checked its availability!

The garage is 20 miles from where she lives and she works full time (10 miles in the other direction) so a phonecall was deemed sufficient yesterday to test the water (as recommended here). Unfortunately, it was not successful - they are not moving at all on the price given and gave a sob story about margins being too tight (this could be true).

Thankfully, she has pulled back from the sale for now and the ball is back in their court. I've told her to shop around and look at other options and she is doing this. Hopefully she'll find that the Juke is not the only car for her and another dealer might be prepared to drop a little more for a cash deal.

Thanks to everyone for their input - I very much appreciate it as this type of deal is not very familiar to me either and I only remember being told that 10% was the usual discount for buying straight.

Right - so she knows exactly what she wants, car, spec, colour, etc. Tell her to ring around a number of other Nissan dealers and get their best price for same and see what they come up with. If she gets a better price from another dealer but the first dealer is the one she wants to deal with / more convenient, then tell them what she's being offered and ask them to match. If they wont go back to the dealer that gave her the best price.

I got an email today from a new website that just launch today called <snip> and it's a new Irish group buying website for "new" cars and new vans, it looks spot-on for what your looking for. It guarantees to get you a better price than you can ever get.

And you registered on boards just to help out with that - well done sir! :D:p:pac:

Off the top of my head I think 10% is a bit rich. Nissan cut the margin on the Juke when it was released to try and keep the list price low.

There are afew around in petrol spec, not so ure about diesels.

If you want a price on oneto try and compare other prices your getting, drop me a PM. Not shilling here btw.
