Freelander 2 v Mutsubishi outlander 2007

Hi All, have narrowed my search for a new vehicle down to the above 2. I need a small 4x4 with capacity to pull horse box & occasionally go off road. I do a lit of driving > 1200 km per week so economy is a big consideration. Currently drive a commercial Nissan x trail but due to arrival of baby need back seats. Very happy with the x trail but think it's a bit frumpy looking. So freelander 2 or outlander ? Budget restricting me to the 2007 year unforctunately. Any personal experiences of either would be welcome !

The Mutsubishi is a bit of a dog.

The current outlander with the vw engine is no dog, but the land rover has way more class.
Outlander has 7 seats (ish) which may make it more pallattable

Both cars have reasons not to buy....Freelander has reliability issues but the Mitsubishi has poor residuals.....however id go for the Outlander.... Mitsubishi are an under-rated car..but on a whole are very good.....tbh though ive no idea what they're like in mud....never ventured that far :P

Had an 07 Outlander for nearly 3 years and while it was ultra reliable, spacious, comfortable and reasonably fuel efficient but I never really liked it. The engine was coarse at low speed and when cold. It had an annoying flat spot that appeared when least desired. The dash wasn't great either. Also bear in mind many 07 Outlanders were 5 seaters inc mine. The 7 seater was a €2.5K option back then.

I've always liked the Freelander 2 but would I buy one? Maybe not..too many reliability issues.

If I was buying similar again I'd get a Subaru Outback. Otherwise I'd get a saloon/estate which is what I did.

I knew the pre 2007 freelanders had reliability issues but wasn't sure if the freelander 2 had? Are the Mitsubishi outlanders more fuel economical or does anyone know ... 5 seater big enough so that not an issue at the moment. Also, any views on jeep compass ?

Everyone knows the original fl had issues, I'm just wondering if people are carrying over the bad name from the original.

The Mitsubisihi has reliability issues too - don't like the Japanese badge fool you into thinking it's reliable.

In particular, I'm thinking of the engine - it's a VAG PD unit, and these are very much best avoided. I know VW started 'phasing out' the 2.0 TDI PD from 08 onwards in favour of the 2.0 TDI CR (which is much more reliable so far), but the Outlander definitely kept the PD lump for a fair bit after 08.

The Peugeot 4008 or Citroen C-Crosser are basically an Outlander but with a Peugeot 2.2 diesel (the same engine that is in the Freelander actually), which is much more reliable than the VW engine - either one of those cars really is the model to go for.

Never looked at the Citroën c crosser but like the look of it. Not gone on the Peugeot though. Is the Citroën a better bet so than landrover freelander 2 or are they comparable ?All in and around the same price bracket !

Oh if you can go for a C-Crosser they are good :)
    Or try an Opel Antara

C crosser in higher tax bracket than Mitsubishi outlander - there's always some snag isn't there :-(
