    hi
sorry for another car suggestion thread.
my mate's friend is selling his 2008 passat with 20kmiles on it.
it is the 1.4L Petrol FSI version with all the accessories loaded.
i will be looking at the car tomorrow.
    any suggestions on this engine?
    does this have any problem?
anything to look for while test driving it?

i do very few miles myself - may be less than 6kmiles per year.
things may change in the future - but i don't know.

    please guide me :-)

Road tax of €630 will mean it will be very hard to sell secondhand.

Other than that, they seem to be reliable enough and by 2009 VW seemed to have fixed most of the many expensive electrical faults that plagued earlier Passats.

It's a 1.4 turbo. I had these as regular rentals in the past and there's nothing at all wring with the engine in the car. It has more than enough power for keeping up with traffic.

    Is the FSI a turbo?

Still though, fuel consumption will be far from great. I've a 1.6 petrol at the moment in a large saloon (Vectra) - suffers from the thirst terribly. It doesn't FEEL underpowered - in fact it has a decent bit of toke - but underneath, it is.

OP is mixed up its a 1.4 TSI. Fuel consumption wont be bad at all and it has plenty of power. 122 BHP iirc.

The 1.4 is a TSI. 122 brake and six speed box. I actually prefer it to my dads Mondeo and that's a 2 litre.

Nice engine the 1.4 Tsi and pretty reliable in the 122bhp guise as far as I know.

Don't you pay which ever is the lower rate on 2008 cars though, meaning the 1.4 TSI will only be liable for the tax rate of a normal 1.4 under the old engine capacity based system?

OP originally said it was a 1.8 and a 09 reg, hence why I said €630 tax:)!

If it's a pre July 08 reg then it will be whatever a 1.4 petrol is to tax under the cc system, I think the emissions are band D so post July it's €447 to tax.

I think they now allow you to pay the cheaper rate, regardless of whether your car was registered before or after July.

I can see a 1.4 TSI Passat being very desirable to somebody under the old system.

That's news to me - I always thought that everything on and from July 08 was CO2, and CO2 only. That would be kind of handy if you were trying to bring in something with a smallish engine but high CO2 actually!

Sad state when we think 122bhp is plenty of power :p

There should be a seperate lane on motorways for 200+bhp cars, wouldn't that be great :D

    Back on topic.

Does the 1.4tsi suffer from the timing belt stretching like the twin charged 1.4?

Yeah, I think it was only decided a good while after the introduction of the new rules.

The fact that the Passat 1.4 TSI could be taxed the same as any 1.4 litre hatchback shows how deeeply flawed the old system was.

Do you know what turbocharging means? What bhp is your golf? 105?

I was sceptical before trying one. That 1.4TSI is a terrifc engine to drive a real surprise and very responsive. Very hard to find them though.

This is what I hate about forums, people posting things who just haven't got a clue.

Hi this car has a turbocharger so these 122 bhp is absolutely enough. Plenty of power with that size of car. I will go for one!!
