The tall ships thread got me thinking about trying some time-lapse shooting, but other than taking many, many pictures in a row I don't really know where to begin, any tips/advice on things like exposure/shutter speed/time between pictures?

I was thinking of chucking something out into the garden for birds to eat then letting the camera document it.
