Yeah I'm hoping to do it. I've registered but it depends on how the IM training is going.

Cool. Hopefully I will spot you. Looks like a nice course. So far I am pretty impressed with my €30 entry fee.

I assumed I wasn't going to do it given the forcast so I did a 4 hr 60km/21km brick today. Oh well if I do do it that could make things interesting. I do need the OW swim practice though.

That's quite the brick. Anyone do this? Only heard of it last week when going to the Ulster final, sounded interesting.

Nice race, weather just about held off for it.

Might aswell stick this up here... lazy copy and paste job :)

Got to Virginia nice and early, about 1pm. Got registered, checked into transition and went out on a bike check.
It was wet and windy and the 15mins on the bike was miserable. Back into transition, racked and left everything setup.
Went back and sat in the car, legs felt heavy just sitting around. Got into my wetsuit in plenty of time and went down to the start. Missed the briefing. Got into the water and seemed to hang around for ages before the off.

    Swim:

Kicked in the chest on the off, good start. I felt like I was swimming well out to the first buoy, I was up in the main group and sighting well. My goggles started to leak coming up to the first turn, I kept going but stopped after the turn to adjust them. I sighted well from here to the second buoy also... it all went a bit wrong from here back to shore. I got a little lost and ended up adding some extra distance on... I swam too far right and then had to swim left instead of keeping it straight. Out of the water in 15mins, a bit disappointed. Thought I had swam better for the first half but might have thrown it away on the way back in.

    T1:

Was crowded, the 400m swim started at the same time and the bulk of these were now in T1. Helmet, glasses and Garmin on.. grab the bike and off. I missed the point in the briefing when they said you could mount your bike in transition... I ran to the mount line and got on, one of the few that did.

    Bike:

Faffed a bit getting my feet into my shoes, need to practice more. Got going but my glasses fogged up, I took them off and stuck them into my pocket instead. I had decided to lap every 5km on the LYC and aim to hit FTP for each one. I felt it would be easier to pace it like that than one big interval. I was passing loads on the bike, all 400m and relays it looked like. Forgot to start my Garmin until about 3km in. Holding power pretty well and averaging just below FTP on each interval. Not a whole lot to note, it was 14km before I started picking up the proper bikers. Power down slightly on the last interval, the last couple of km was back on the N3 which was fast.

    T2:

Bike racked, helmet off. Wiped the mud and grit off my feet before putting my runners on... didn't want any stones in my shoes for the run.

    Run:

Out on the run and my legs felt ropey. My legs felt dead and sluggish on the first km, pace was okay. My legs loosened up after the first km, the second km started with an uphill and pace dropped off a bit. I was passed twice, one was a relay and one was a guy I passed on the bike around 15km. Some cramps in my stomach at this point and I almost felt like I could be looking at a DNF. It passed and I kept plugging away, passed a few between here and the turn point.. they mainly looked like relay teams. I like out and back runs as you can count the places ahead of you. I knew I was 15th overall at the turnpoint. Quiet enough from here to the 5km mark, I spotted 2 or 3 places up ahead and tried my best to pick up the pace for the last 800m, my legs just didn't have it... they felt weak like I could not push on harder. Didn't make up those places before crossing the line, finished 15th overall. 12th in the 'elite male'.

Well done, nonetheless, your time was excellent.

I'm a leisure cyclist, living close to the event, and am wondering how you can shave 12 minutes off my lap time on the bike. In my defence, I'm probably that bit older, less fit and carrying about 20Kg too much, but the speed of the Elite athletes is incredible, especially given you/they have just come out of the lake.

It's a fun event, and for a great cause. The event, itself, raised close on €30k, in 2010. This year it will be down a bit, due to the state of the economy and a proliferation of other charity events.

Let's hope to see you back in 2012 and , hopefully, about 10 places further up the rankings?
