Not to be outdone, Channel 4 have "The Space Shuttle's Last Flight" tonight (Sat), 7:30pm.

    Compare and contrast.

Same here, but no sympathy from Mrs Beeker, think she is just happy it is all over and I wont have to organise everything around Shuttle flights.

Only just seen this but have it set to record on c4+1 at 8.30pm

I suspect they'll be plenty of these programmes on Nat geo and discovery over the next few weeks/months

Hope so but don't expect much quality stuff as experience shows they prefer sensation to facts. Still looking forward to what ever is on offer:)

I seriously have a lump in my throat.

The close out crew need to stay together. I'd love to see them running a restaurant or something.. where you don't get served unless your radio procedure was right or if your mustache wasnt substatial enough.

The lady who made the sandwiches reminded me of my Nan.. someone who regardless of the task, put their heart and soul into it. She cared. Thats rare these days. People who care like her should be making astronaut sandwiches for as long as she wants.

The man who replaces tiles and clearly put his life into maintaining his white tash.. Everyone just oozed pride. People like that deserve hero status.

Its sad for me.. when I was 9 I wrote down 'mission control' on my future job list in school. Its only now I realise that it will actually never ever happen. Now I know I never had a shot anyway.. but a huge part of my geekdom is gone. Its sad. Almost like my tendency towards silly aspirations landed with Atlantis.

It was my little dream. Most lads wanted to be John Aldridge. I wanted to be the guy that said 'Go at throttle up'.

Can't say this to the lads.. They wont understand. This seems to be the right place.

    Wheel stop lads.. Wheel stop.

I thoroughly enjoyed that show, I'm gutted to see the end of the Shuttle programme, it was a huge part of my childhood. Here's hoping in time we'll see something even more iconic.

Should be ready by the end of 2012. I am planning a trip to go see all 3 in one trip, hopefully 2013:)

Enjoyed the BBC show, very well put together. Found the C4 one a bit more 'tabloidy' if that makes any sense. Heavy on disasters, seemed to make a lot of Challenger & Columbia and Hubbles first deployment.

I agree. You can normally trust the BBC for quality:)

Like Beeker I totally agree on this. The BBC program was well put together and informative as well as entertaining. The emotion of the people who were involved with the shuttle program was very clear to see.

I didn't bother with the Channel 4 one, as I'm generally not a fan of Channel's four documentaries. Their quality tends not to be great. :D

Discovery Channel on Sunday night at 22.00, Last Shuttle.

Sounds pretty good and appears to have been well received stateside when it aired recently.:)

Discovery programme was a bit meh tbh. Some excellent footage from the VAB,OPF and SRB retrieval ships(especially the sonic booms from the SRB's) and following the workers at KSC. Let down imo by nearly half of the programme being about Columbia & Challenger. Discovery/Nat Geo & History have done the tragedies to death at this stage,it added nothing to the narrative of this programme by focusing on them.

Best one so far remains the BBC one. That was excellent.

I'd put Shatners one in a close 2nd behind the BBC one. BBC programme has been the best documentary i've seen on the SSP in a long long time.

I agree with that. The BBC one was by far the best.

Just got the chance to watch the Discovery one in full. I have to say I was impressed by it. Not as good as the BBC one but it did convey the emotion of the end to me. You could see the very real emotions felt by the people who worked on these amazing machines. I feel the same loss in my own way. The Shuttle was such a huge part of my life since I was 13 that it is still hard to accept it is over:( Might be the bottle of wine I have just had but Bob Crippen's speech on the runway at KSC at the Columbia memorial still brings a tear to my eye "Hail Columbia", fu*k thats so sad! you can see his genuine pain at the loss.
This is a period of history that will never be repeated. We have witnessed the ending of the golden age of spaceflight.
