I had my heart set on buying a Yaris but I've changed my mind. Would a Polo be a good car to buy? Are they reliable/economical? I'd be interested in the 2004/2005 models because they suit my price range the best. I would like to find out the spec of the diff models too but all I can find online are the UK ones

here we go donedeal polos 04/05
id say they are grate cars, but many people has opposite thoughts , yaris are good also, just smaller than polo.

catching aye one - 01, 1.4 tdi one for 2450 .... have to be very economical .

Few of my friends had polos and I sold a few through work. The electrics wouldn't be fantastic on them. Also the 1.2 engine gets very rattley with age
The fiesta 1.25 is a far better car in my opinion. You'd get an 08 with €156 tax for 6k I think

I'd agree with Colm, a Fiesta 1.25 litre would be a better car than the Polo and also better value. My sister bought a 08 Fiesta Steel II last year for €7600 from a Ford dealer with a 6 month warranty so it should be possible to buy a similar car now for close to €6k. My sister hasn't had any issues with it in 12 months and loves it, servicing and parts are cheap, it's good on fuel and nippy enough for town driving. Also while my sister's car was in for some body work repair she had a loan of a 07 Polo, she hated it and could not wait to get here Fiesta back despite owning a Lupo for 4 years prior to buying the Fiesta.

The Steel II was a run out model and comes with 16" alloy wheels, sunroof, upgraded Sony MP3 reading stereo, rain sensing wipers and dusk sensing headlights. I'd doubt you will find a Polo or any other small car in the country with a similar spec for the money.

For example, I would expect some flexibility on the price of this one:

I've never been in a 1.25L Fiesta before - what are they like to drive between 100 and 120 kph?

The 08 Fiesta is a bit out of my price range  They're lovely looking cars and all that fancy stuff sounds like a dream compared to the heap of crap I drive now! I'm leaning towards the Yaris again after finding out that the Polo isn't great... What's the difference between a diesel and petrol Yaris? Yes I know the obvious difference but I mean with regards to tax and running costs. Would a 1.3 diesel be the same to drive as a 1.3 petrol?

Diesel yariss are great craic, they've only got 75hp but loads of torque. They're very efficient but tax is €333 as opposed to €180 odd for a 1.0, its way more complicated and they're bonkers money to buy.

Also its very to burn the clutch out on them :D

    What exactly is your budget?

€5000 but I could spend another couple of hundred for something I really want.:D

I wouldn't rule out Polos at all, I know a lot of people who've had them and they were absolutely bulletproof.

AFAIK the polo can give trouble with the power steering system. The Yaris is built of cheap plastics and compared to the Fiesta or Polo if fails in the build quality department. Its reliable though and so is the Fiesta

I want something reliable anyways. I have a 01 Fiat Punto at the moment and some days it just decides not to start... Usually when I'm after working a long day and I can't wait to get home! Also the tax is €87 for 3 months and it really annoys me having to pay that for such an old car  and then having to get it NCT'd every year since it's now 10 years old.. So much money!

I wouldn't let tax put me off buying an old car as long as the car is running well.
I have a feeling the other problems make the tax seem pointless but a good example of a Yaris or Polo from 2000 could be fantastic.

The NCT is annoying though. My car has somehow missed the 2 year rule, it must have been down to the exact date registered.
