Is it illegal to claim to be a solicitor when you're not?

Have noticed it on a few threads in Motors... A car is rear-ended and the "rear-endee" threatens the "rear-ender" with I/my spouse/second cousin is a solicitor and will take you to the cleaners.

I've half a notion I read somewhere that it's an offence to claim to be a solicitor when you're not but can't find it...

    Any thoughts?

    Thanks.

S.56 Solicitors Act 1954 and s.5 Solicitors (Amendment) Act 2002.

No reputable solicitor would allow relatives etc to make such claims about legal connections - shows gross immaturity.

There is a funny story about a very prominent Mayo lawyer having a row over some traffic incident with a party who did not know him. The other party finally threatened " my solicitor will straighten you out". On being asked who his solicitor was, it turned out to be a very junior member of said prominent lawyers firm.

I've seen it happen once or twice where someone has implied as opposed to actually stated that they are a solicitor, by the language they use. Something like, "I appear for Mr. X", or "I am representing or I am instructed by Ms. Y"...
