Lad I know had a 2006/2007 one from new too, no bother at all, he got a new one a few months back. He's had the VW vans for years, he'd only do small miles and light work but never a bother with it.

When I was deciding on best vw van - I spoke to a vw mechanic....He advised the 1.9 tdi is alot more relaiable & cheaper to run. Bought a clean 19.tdi & never had a days bother....He's had a few 2.5 in for various jobs, mainly engine work since so he was telling me the truth but liek everything not all will give trouble...well looked after examples should be problem free. Good look in the searching....

I had a 2005 2.5 130 and in the space of a year at 60 to 70 k miles,I had to replace shocks €700 ,clutch and dmf €1600 ,water pump (nearly a grand because of labour),air con motor, power steering(all around 5-600) .The electric mirrors packed up,as did the ventilation system. All in all about 7 grand of bills in a year.I hope you get a good one,but I could not recommend them.Oh yeah, around town I got 22 mpg.
On the plus side, these are not just fast 'for a van' these are fast full stop.

Iv Had both the 1.9 and 2.5 T5 and would defiantly recommend the 2.5, its a better engine by far, it can be expensive to repair (so i hear) but one good point over the 1.9 is that they have a timing chain rather than a timing belt so this is something less to worry about! I have had mine for a year now and bought it with 100,000 on the clock and all iv done is replace a brake light bulb, I do alot of mileage and carry some heavy loads, so it has to do a fair bit of work, and when the time comes ill defiantly buy another one!

Why are van engines so bad :p Why do they de-tune them so much? Surely a transporter with a ton of stuff in the back and a trailer needs more ponies than a golf
